Hi @Denny64,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like your HP Victus laptop is having trouble with its internal display, as it doesn't show up in the Device Manager and sometimes requires a hard reset to work. Here's a list of suggestions to help resolve this issue.
Check the Display Connection:
- It's possible that the cable connecting the display to the motherboard is loose or damaged. If you're comfortable with disassembling the laptop, check for any loose connections. If not, this might need to be checked by a technician.
Reinstall Display Drivers:
- Since the internal screen isn't showing up in Device Manager, it could be a driver issue. Try uninstalling any display adapters in Device Manager (under Display adapters) and then restart your laptop. Windows should attempt to reinstall the drivers automatically.
Update or Rollback BIOS:
- You mentioned updating the BIOS, but sometimes newer versions may introduce compatibility issues. Try rolling back to a previous BIOS version to see if that resolves the problem. If you need help with this, I can guide you through the rollback process.
Enable the Display in BIOS:
- There might be a setting in the BIOS that disables the internal display. Check your BIOS settings to ensure the internal display is enabled. You can typically enter the BIOS by pressing F10 during startup.
Check Power Settings:
- Sometimes, power settings might interfere with how the screen behaves. Ensure that your laptop isn't set to disable the display when plugged in or during certain power modes. You can check this under Power & Sleep Settings in Windows.
Test with External Monitor:
- You've mentioned that the external monitor works fine, which could suggest the issue is isolated to the internal display. While using the external monitor, try pressing Windows + P and select PC Screen Only to force the laptop to use its internal display.
Hard Reset Technique:
- Since the display sometimes works after a hard reset, try performing this more consistently. To do this, turn off your laptop, remove the battery (if removable), unplug the power cord, and hold down the power button for about 30 seconds. Then, reconnect everything and try turning it on again.
Check for Hardware Issues:
- If the issue persists, it's possible that there is a hardware failure (e.g., faulty screen or motherboard), especially if the screen is not showing up in Device Manager at all. A technician can help diagnose and repair this.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
