HP ZBook Studio G3
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

When restart my Laptop after sleep mode, I get only a black laptop screen.  Only hard reset resolves this. Or when I connect a Hdmi monitor on the laptop, the screen is shown on the external display. However I do not always have an external display.

@JohnGH

This may or may not be related to what just happened to my own ZBook 17 G3.

Yes, external monitor still works (different driver controls external device).

On 25-Jan-2018, Windows Updates updated the Intel Driver on the workstation.

Result was that waking from sleep mode would cause the main display to show as an unusable striped mess (technical term for fine lined, multi-colored, garbled display).

Not black -- but maybe somewhat the "same thing" in this case.

Rolling back the driver fixed the problem on my workstation.

Try / Consider...

If you wish, first create a Restore Point:

Control Panel > icon view > System > System Protection

Click (Highlight) your main disk (C) > Select Create a Restore Point

Shut down the notebook > wait a few seconds...

Boot the notebook >

Open the Display Manager > open category Display Adapters >

Right-Click on your Intel Graphics > Properties >

tab Driver > Roll Back Driver

Your Display Driver (same as for my workstation):

sp79322.exe

I have the same problem. Started a week after I got the laptop and updated to Windows 10. Called customer service and the rep installed new bios and updates remotely and changed power settings. It stopped for a while but the problem is back after two months.

@dtapronti

OK, so not the same thing as the "garbled screen" problem resolved by rolling back to the older driver.

It was worth a shot.

I have a black screen on the main display, when i move the mouse I get the striped mess indeed. But when I stop moving it is black again.  Next weekend I will try your suggestion to install an older driver.
