Hi  @Ravi0676

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thank you for reaching out .

I understand that your notebook is not booting properly. Based on your description, the laptop attempts to power on, the Caps Lock blinks once, shuts down, waits a few seconds, and then repeats the same cycle while the screen remains black. I will be glad to help.

To assist you better, could you kindly confirm the exact product number of your HP EliteBook 840 G6 and answer the following questions?

  1. Did this issue start after a BIOS update, Windows update, hardware change, or a battery/power-related event?
  2. Do you hear any fan noise or see the power button light remain on during startup?
  3. Is the Caps Lock blinking only once repeatedly, or does it blink in a specific pattern (for example, 2, 3, or more blinks)?
  4. If an external monitor is connected, does it display anything?
  5. Are you using the original HP charger, and does the charging LED turn on when the adapter is connected?

In the meantime, kindly try the following steps:

Step 1: Perform a Hard Reset - Click here for steps

  1. Turn off the notebook completely.
  2. Disconnect the AC adapter.
  3. Remove any connected USB devices, docking stations, SD cards, or external accessories.
  4. Press and hold the Power button for 15 to 20 seconds.
  5. Reconnect only the AC adapter and try powering on the laptop.

Step 2: Check for a Display Issue  - Click here for steps

  1. Power on the notebook.
  2. Repeatedly press the Windows + B keys.
  3. While holding those keys, press and hold the Power button for 2 to 3 seconds, then release the Power button while continuing to hold Windows + B for a few more seconds.
  4. If available, listen for beeps or watch for any change on the screen.

Step 3: Verify the Charger and Power Source

  1. Connect the charger directly to a wall outlet.
  2. Check whether the charging LED near the power port illuminates.
  3. If possible, test with another compatible HP power adapter.

Step 4: Disconnect External Devices

A faulty USB device can occasionally prevent startup. Kindly ensure all external devices are disconnected before testing again.

If the notebook continues to restart with a blinking Caps Lock light and no display, the blink code may help identify whether the issue is related to memory, BIOS, system board, or another hardware component.

kindly refer to these HP documents: Computer beeps or a light blinks during startup - Click here

I hope this helps.

Hi @Ravi0676,

Thank you for the additional information. Since the notebook powers on, the power button and hotspot key lights come on, then it shuts down and the Caps Lock blinks once before repeating the cycle, while the charger and charging LED are working normally, this generally points to a hardware initialization issue, most commonly related to the system board, BIOS, or memory not completing the startup process.

Kindly try these simple steps:

Step 1: Hard Reset

  1. Turn off the notebook.
  2. Disconnect the AC adapter.
  3. Remove all USB devices and accessories.
  4. Press and hold the Power button for 20 seconds.
  5. Reconnect only the charger and try turning it on.

Step 2: BIOS Recovery

  1. Connect the charger.
  2. Press and hold Windows + B.
  3. While holding these keys, press and hold the Power button for 2-3 seconds, then release the Power button.
  4. Continue holding Windows + B for another 10 seconds.
  5. Check if the BIOS recovery screen appears.

Step 3: Confirm the Blink Pattern

Please carefully observe the Caps Lock LED and confirm whether it is:

  • One long blink repeating continuously, or
  • A sequence of short blinks (for example 2, 3, or more blinks).

This information will help identify the exact hardware component causing the issue.

If the issue persists after the above steps, the notebook may require hardware diagnostics or service.

I hope this helps.
