The screen on my old hp6730s laptop has failed.

I can faintly see the display by shining a light on it.

I cannot get any display on a tv screen using a VGA cable.

I have already tried replacing the inverter with no change.

Can anybody advise where to look for the fault please.

From your description, it sounds like the video chip in your laptop has failed -- and since that is soldered to the system board, it is not replaceable.

Plus, without being able to see a screen, even hooking up an external monitor will not help because without being able to run diagnostics, you can't confirm the failure of any of the hardware.
