What is the Operating System of your machine ? For Windows 10 please try
(a) Hit Win key,
(b) Locate a programs/application you wish to create icon on desktop,
(c) Right click then select More
(d) Select Pin to taskbar
Now you can drag icon to desktop or leave it on Taskbar.
