HP Laptop 17t
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

This hp laptop is brand new and the keyboard shortcuts keep poping up when I'm typing. Its driving me crazy. It often happens when I'm typing an email using outlook 365 and the developer tools pops open, or typing messages, or just plain typing fast on my keyboard. My other coworkers do not have the same problem. I can't find where to disalbe shortcuts or maybe its hotkeys causing this!

@Nick333

Thank you for posting on HP Forums,

Echo_Lake is at your service.

As I understand, developer tool pops open while you're using Outlook email,

No worries, as I'll be glad to help you, that said, I'll need a few more details to dissect your concern & provide an accurate solution:

  • What is the product number of your device? Use this link to find it: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03754824
  • (Ensure you do not share any of your personal information such as serial, phone number, email ID, etc...).
  • Have you attempted any steps on your own before posting on the HP Forums?
  • When was the last time it worked without these issues?
  • Could you please share a screenshot/picture of how it looks?
  • Does the keyboard types automatically (when you're writing an email)?
  • Does this only happen in Outlook?
  • Do you use F12 key while you're on Outlook writing an email?

I have a few troubleshooting steps to resolve the issue:

Uninstall and reinstall keyboard drivers:

1. Press Windows + X to open the menu, and choose Device Manager on it.

2. In device manager, expand category “Keyboards”.

3. Under this category, right click on your Keyboard driver and click on Uninstall.

4. You may be required to confirm the uninstallation. Check the box next to “Delete the driver software for this device” and click OK button.

5. Restart your PC for the change to take effect. After restarting. Windows will attempt to reinstall the driver.

6. Do not perform any manual upgrades to the driver until it does automatically

To disable, or enable, the function key (fn) in the BIOS, do the following steps.

  • Hold the power button for at least five seconds to turn off the computer.
  • Turn on the computer and immediately press the f10 key repeatedly, about once every second to open the BIOS setup window.
  • Press the right-arrow or left-arrow keys to navigate to the System Configuration option.

  • Press the up-arrow or down-arrow keys to navigate to the Action Keys Mode option, and then press the enter key to display the Enable / Disable menu.

  • Select the desired mode:
    • Disabled: Requires pressing and holding the function key (fn) while pressing one of the f1 through f12 keys to use the action indicated on the action key.

For example, on some computer models, if the Action Keys Mode is Disabled, pressing the f11 key will minimize and maximize a web browser if open. Alternatively, pressing and holding the fn + f11 keys will mute the sound.
