HP Notebook - 17-ca0003na
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi! Does anyone know how to disable the touchpad on a HP Notebook - 17-ca0003na ?

In ELAN Touchpad properties, the "Disable Device" button is greyed out!

And I have tried twice to uninstall the device, but the system won't let me.

So annoying. Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the HP support community.

  1. Press Windows Key + X to open Win + X menu and select Control Panel from the list.

  2. When Control Panel opens, go to Hardware and Sound section and select Mouse.

  3. When Mouse settings window opens, you should see ELAN or Device Settings tab. Switch to it.

  4. Locate Disable internal pointing device when external USB pointing device is attached option and enable it.

  5. Click Apply and OK to save changes.

If that doesn't work or isn't available, a registry edit should be the solution for us, I'd personally suggest a registry backup by clicking on file and export before performing the below steps, to be on a safer side:

  1. Open Registry Editor and go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Elantech/Othersetting/DisableWhenDetectUSBMousekey in the left pane.

  2. Change the value from 0 to 1 and close Registry Editor.

  • After making those changes your touchpad will now be disabled every time you connect a mouse to your laptop. As you can see, even though this option isn’t available, you can still enable it by following these steps. We have to mention that this solution applies only if you’re using ELAN touchpad.

Let me know how it goes.

Hi. Thank you for your 2 suggestions. Unfortunately none of them work.

Suggestion 1.  When I click on "Mouse" I don't get any "Mouse settings", only "Mouse properties" and the options  you mention are nowhere to be found.

Suggestion 2. The Registry Editor - I followed your instructions and in the end changed 0 to 1. Unfortunately my touchpad is still working. I have had to cut out a piece of cardboard to cover it with. Annoying, but what can I do?

Someone at HP support said that Windows has made updates to the system that makes it impossible to disable the touchpad. Why? I can't be the only one who accidentally touches the touchpad all the time when I type? When I typ, my hands lean on where it is. I don't hold them up in the air when I am typing. It is crazy.

This might require remote access of the computer to fix the issue.

I request you to talk to HP support.

They might have multiple options to help you with this.

  1. Click on this link - https://support.hp.com/us-en/contact-hp?openCLC=true
  2. Select the country.
  3. Enter the serial of your device.
  4. Select the country from the drop-down.
  5. Click on "Show Options".
  6. Fill the web-form. A case number and phone number will now populate for you.

I hope that helps.
