The answer is: double-tap the fn key.
I saw this in a different post on this topic, and double-tapping the fn key will allow you to hit the function buttons without holding that key, but it does not stick, i.e. the next time you need a fn key you have to double-tap again. I'm not sure why it does that, I don't have sticky keys on.
