Hello, I’m using an HP EliteBook 8460w with dual GPUs: an AMD Radeon 6470M/7400M and the integrated Intel HD 3000 on my Intel Core i7-2760QM. My AMD Radeon GPU is showing signs of failure, and I’d like to switch entirely to the Intel HD graphics.
Could anyone guide me on how to force the laptop to use the integrated GPU instead of the dedicated AMD card? I’m locked from BIOS, but i am open to driver settings, or Windows configuration tweaks.
My Windows 10 Version is 1709

Switching to Integrated Intel HD Graphics on HP EliteBook 8460w

To use only the integrated Intel HD 3000 graphics on your HP EliteBook 8460w, you'll need to disable your dedicated AMD Radeon GPU from the BIOS setup or through your Windows settings. Here's a step-by-step guide:

  1. Access BIOS/UEFI Settings:

  2. Restart your computer.

  3. As soon as the HP logo appears, repeatedly press the Esc key on your keyboard.
  4. When the Start menu is displayed, press the F10 key to enter the BIOS setup.

  5. Configure Graphics Settings:

  6. Go to the Advanced tab in the BIOS setup menu.

  7. Look for an option related to Switchable Graphics or Graphics Configuration.
  8. Set the graphics to Integrated Graphics or something similar that suggests using only the Intel HD graphics.
  9. Save the changes and exit the BIOS. The system will restart.

  10. Disable AMD Radeon Graphics in Windows:

  11. Boot into Windows.

  12. Right-click on the Start Menu, and select Device Manager.
  13. Expand the Display Adapters section.
  14. Right-click on the AMD Radeon 6470M graphics card, and select Disable Device. This will stop Windows from using the Radeon graphics.

  15. Verify Intel HD Graphics Usage:

  16. Open the Control Panel, go to System and Security, then select System.

  17. Under Device Manager, ensure that the AMD Radeon is still disabled.
  18. Check if your computer is now using the Intel HD Graphics 3000 under Display Adapters.

I hope this helps!

Take care and have an amazing day!

Thank you so much for your response @MRohan

We are happy to assist you.

Unfortunately, if you have forgotten or lost the BIOS password for your HP EliteBook 8460w, there is no direct way to reset the password. HP cannot reset a lost or forgotten BIOS password, and the only solution would be to replace the system board which may incur additional costs.

Steps to Resolve:

  1. Verify Warranty Status: Before proceeding, check if your laptop is still under warranty. This might help reduce replacement costs. You can check the warranty status by going to the HP Product Warranty Check.

  2. Contact HP Support: Reach out to HP customer support for further assistance. They might provide more options depending on your situation.

  3. Consider System Board Replacement: As a last resort, the replacement of the system board is required to resolve a forgotten BIOS password issue.

Take care and have an amazing day!
