Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding switching to an external monitor to access the BIOS menu!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution. Here are a few steps you can follow:
Connect External Monitor
Make sure the external monitor is properly connected to your laptop. If you're using HDMI or VGA, ensure the cable is securely plugged in.
Access the BIOS Menu via Keyboard
- Power off the laptop completely.
- Turn the laptop on and immediately start pressing the Esc key repeatedly (about once every second) to enter the Startup Menu.
- If you don’t see the menu, try pressing the F10 key to access the BIOS directly.
- On the external monitor, you should see the options for booting from a device or accessing the BIOS settings.
Enable External Monitor in BIOS (if necessary)
If the external monitor is not displaying during startup, you may need to enable external display output in the BIOS settings.
- Once you’re in the BIOS, look for an option related to display settings (typically under the Advanced tab).
- Set the external monitor as the primary display if such an option exists.
- Save the changes and exit the BIOS (usually by pressing F10 and selecting Yes).
Reinstall Windows
Once the external monitor is displaying the BIOS or boot menu:
- Insert your bootable USB drive containing the Windows installation.
- Restart the system and press the Esc or F9 key to open the Boot Menu.
- Select the USB drive to boot from and follow the instructions to reinstall Windows.
Let me know if you need further assistance! 😊
Take care, and have an amazing day!

@Kana88, Thank you for trying the above steps.
If your external monitor is not displaying the BIOS menu, try these alternative solutions:
Close the Laptop Lid After Turning It On
- Connect the external monitor.
- Turn on the laptop and immediately close the lid to force display output to the external screen.
Use the Correct Function Key (Fn + Display Toggle)
- Some HP laptops require pressing
Fn + F4
(orF4
alone) to switch displays. - Try pressing
F4
multiple times after turning on the laptop.
Try Different Ports & Cables
- Use a different HDMI or DisplayPort if available.
- If possible, test with another monitor or TV.
Remove Battery & CMOS Reset (If Applicable)
- Remove the battery (if detachable).
- Disconnect the power cable.
- Hold the power button for 30 seconds.
- Reconnect and try again.
Connect Monitor After Entering BIOS
- Turn on the laptop without the external monitor connected.
- Press
Esc
repeatedly. - Once the laptop starts, connect the external monitor and press
F4
to switch displays.
Let me know if this helps. Thank you for your patience!
