I want to learn how to repair my HP 17-series laptop. The left button below the touchpad is LOOSE. It is the button I use the most. And I'm not heavy handed either. This laptop was purchased about 3 years ago. The left touchpad button became loose right after the warranty was up. GRRRR. I thought it just accidentally broke from a book or something .. even as careful as I am with it, and I'm very careful so I've been very irritated .. but I digress.
I've looked online and I've looked on HP"s website for a video showing how to replace and/or fix the key. So far I actually found one but it wasn't for my model, it was for another brand's laptop. But it gave me a little confidence to attempt a repair if I decide to go that route. I've been thinking about replacing the touchpad until I really looked at the face of laptop. The touchpad is integrated. If I replace the touchpad I'm replacing the whooole face of the laptop that surrounds the keyboard and power button and is part of the hinge! Wonder how much that repair is?! Or the part. Don't know if I want to attempt it .. mostly because I'm tired right now.
So the search for a video that shows how to repair the LOOSE LEFT TOUCHPAD BUTTON continues. If I decide to RISK the repair myself I will also attempt to video the event and share it with the community. In the meantime I hope stays safe and healthy and wear your masks from the time you leave home until the time you return without taking it off if you can handle it. I've been living the mask/gloves/sanitizer life for THREE YEARS. You guys are now living my life and believe me there are lots of perks! Like maybe the FIRST COLD & FLU SEASON WE HIT won't be so bad because is being extra clean. Hold onto your hats ladies and gentlemen .. it's gonna be a bumpy ride. 8=) But we can get through it together!

Hi my Queen,
On page 55 of service manual you can see the steps to replace the board. Or in your case, it might be enough to tighten the 2 screws which hold touchpad click board in place.

The only difficulty I can see is if the actual "screw holders" have broken loose. In that case you can let me know and we can see how to proceed.
If the board is defective you can replace with part number 858259-001.
I can not find a video, so if you make one please share.
Hope it helps,
David
