I bought this laptop back in September for school. Working fine until recently the mouse cursor is being weird. Sometimes it would switch to pen cursor and moves around once in a while. I tried turning bluetooth and pen off, disabled mouse and just have the touch pad and even tried virse versa where I disabled touchpad and touch screen and just have the mouse plug in. Not sure whats happening exactly. Here's a video of what its doing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VHT5MNxYyIQ

Welcome to HP Forums. This is a great place to get support, find answers and tips.
I have gone through your Post and I would like to help
I suggest you download and run the HP Support Assistant from this Link: https://www8.hp.com/us/en/campaigns/hpsupportassistant/hpsupport.html?jumpid=va_r602_us/en/any/psg/p...
HPSA will automatically search for all the latest drivers for your Notebook
-
Click My devices in the top menu, and then click Updates in the My PC or My notebook pane.
-
Click Check for updates and messages to scan for new updates.
-
Review the list of updates. Updates with a yellow information icon are recommended. Updates with a blue information icon are optional.
-
Click the update name for a description, version number, and file size.
-
Select the box next to any updates you want to install, and then click Download and install.
Also ensure Windows is up to date
Select the Start button, and then go to Settings > Update & security > Windows Update , and select Check for updates. If Windows Update says your device is up to date, you have all the updates that are currently available.
I would also suggest you run a Hardware Test on the Touchpad to confirm the Hardware Functionality
- Hold the power button for at least five seconds to turn off the computer.
- Turn on the computer and immediately press Esc repeatedly, about once every second.
- When the menu appears, press the F2 key.
- On the main menu, click Component Tests and Touchpad
Keep me posted how it goes
Thank you and have a wonderful day 😊

Wow this actually fixed it. According to microsoft updates all my system were up to date but the hp assistance states my BIOS was out dated and therefore updated it. It's been about 30 minutes now and so far cursor is not going crazy. Thanks 🙂

I'm the Riddle_Decipher & I'm writing on behalf of my colleague @KrazyToad, as the tech is out for the day,
that said, I have reviewed your concern and the entire conversation, did some research and here's what I need to know:
Did you try creating a new user account to check if it works on it?
Does the mouse work fine on safe mode?
If not, please do, in fact, here's the link to get you started: Click here for the steps.
That said, if the mouse works on the safe mode, it means that there's a compatibility issue with either an application or setting within the normal boot.
If you have more than one anti-virus program, please make sure you remove it as that could also cause such issues,
If the issue persists, use the below steps to resolve the issue:
Method 1: Reinstall Mouse Driver
Before we begin, you should try your mouse on another computer to see if the lagging or freezing problem continues.
If your mouse works well on the other computer, your mouse or the mouse driver could be at fault. To fix it:
- 1) On your Keyboard, press the Windows logo key and X at the same time. Click Device Manager.
- 2) Expand Mouse and another pointing device.
- 3) Right-click your mouse and click Uninstall.
- Click OK.
- If you’re prompted to restart your computer, click Yes.
- 4) If you choose not to restart your computer right after the uninstall, go to the toolbar in Device Manager and click Scan for hardware changes.
- If the mouse is currently not working, you can press F5 on your keyboard and the scan will start.
- Windows will help you reinstall the drivers for your mouse.
- If Windows cannot help you find the correct mouse driver for your device, you might need to look for the driver by yourself on the manufacturer’s support website.
If the issue persists, click here and check this related post to resolve the issue.
(Though the header is different, the steps to follow will help resolve your concern & By the end of this article all the issues should be resolved)
Let me know how that pans out,

Hello Riddle, did what you said and log in to a different user and also in safe mode. The problem still occurs on both of them and I'm not even using a mouse just the touchpad. the cursor jumps around and sometimes switches to pen cursor and then jumps around once every 10-15min or so and that makes it to hard to know sometimes if I solved the issue or not. I also only have one antivirus (McAfee) came with it.

Hi @jbcostan, I am the Mr.Robot. It looks like you were interacting with @Riddle_Decipher, but he is out of the office today, so I'll take over from here.
Did you make any software or hardware changes on your PC?
Have you tried checking with an external mouse?
I'm sorry for the inconvenience caused to you.
As you mentioned you still have issues after trying out the steps.
As we have exhausted with all the steps, try performing a complete system recovery on your PC and check if it helps.
Refer this article to know more information about performing a system recovery on your PC. Click Here
You can also try the steps recommended below if the still persists after trying the steps recommended before.
Control Panel -> Hardware & Sound -> Power Options -> Change Plan Settings (of current selected plan) -> Change Advanced Power Settings -> USB Selective Suspend Setting -> Disable (both)
Control Panel -> Hardware & Sound -> Power Options -> Change Plan Settings (of current selected plan) -> Change Advanced Power Settings -> PCI-Express -> Link State Power Management -> Disable (both)
Also, try running a system diagnostics test on your PC and check if the hardware components on your PC are functioning correctly.
Refer this article to know more information about running system diagnostics on your PC.
Let me know if this helps!
Have a pleasant day ahead! 🙂

Hey MrRobot thanks for replying, and here's to your followup.
1) No I did not make any software and hardware changes
2) Yes I did try an external mouse and the same issue
3) I did factory reset yesterday and there was a big improvement and I thought for a sec the problem was solved. However, the issue is still there but it's not as often as before. It's liveable but this laptop is only about 3 months old, I think i'll just get worst if we don't do anything about it.
4) I tried disabling USB selective suspend setting on both plug and batter and still the same. I also disabled the link state power management on both plug and battery and still the same.
All I can say is that after the factory reset and software updates the issue has gone down a bit. Usually the mouse jumps around (and sometimes switches to pen cursor then jumps around) when I do excessive scrolling on the web or on an open file.

@jbcostan, Thanks for your quick response and time again.
I appriciate your efforts for writing back to us.
As you mentioned the issue still persists after performing a factory reset.
I would suggest try running a system diagnostics test on your PC and check if the hardware components on your PC are functioning correctly.
Refer this article to know more information about running system diagnostics on your PC.
If the issue still persists after trying out the steps. Your PC might be infected with virus try performing a recovery using the recovery kit.
If you don't have a set of recovery kit. I will share you few details through a private message about the service options for your laptop.
Please watch your inbox for more information.
Hope this helps!
Take Care! 🙂
