HP Spectre x360 Convertible Laptop PC 15-eb1043dx
Microsoft Windows 11

I have a Spectre x360 that has a black screen issue. It is running windows 11. The screen is black when I turn the laptop on but when I plug the computer into an external monitor, I can use the external monitor fine but the screen is still black. Touch screen input works fine but the screen remains black. I have turned on and off the computer, I have installed all of the new graphics drivers, I have reset BIOS and CMOS and installed all updated BIOS. There is no functionality loss except the screen will not turn on. This happened several years ago and not long after the laptop was purchased new, I have been using an external monitor ever since

Hi @q1700,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I can imagine how frustrating it is to have such a premium device like the HP Spectre x360 and be stuck using an external monitor for years because the internal display stays black. Let’s go through the most accurate HP steps and resources to address this issue.

What We Know

  • Model: Spectre x360 Convertible 15-eb1043dx
  • OS: Windows 11
  • Symptoms:
    • Internal display is black at all times (even during boot/BIOS).
    • Touchscreen input works (so the digitizer is functional).
    • External monitor works fine (GPU and system are operational).
  • Actions already tried:
    • BIOS reset and update
    • CMOS reset
    • Latest graphics drivers installed
    • Windows fully updated

This strongly suggests a hardware-level display path failure, most likely the internal display panel or its eDP cable, not the GPU or OS.

Recommended Steps

1. Perform a Hard Reset

  • Power off the laptop.
  • Disconnect the AC adapter and all peripherals.
  • Press and hold the Power button for 15 seconds.
  • Reconnect the power and turn on.

(This clears residual power and can revive display circuits.)

2. Check Display in BIOS

  • Power on and immediately press Esc → F10 for BIOS Setup.
  • If the internal screen is still black in BIOS, this confirms a hardware issue (not Windows or drivers).

3. Run HP Diagnostics

  • Connect the external monitor.
  • Press Esc → F2 at startup for HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI.
  • Run Display Test (if available).
  • If the test fails or the internal screen remains black, note the failure code.

4. Inspect Lid Sensor & Brightness

  • Shine a flashlight at the screen during boot. If you see a faint image, the backlight may have failed.
  • If no image at all, likely the panel or cable is disconnected or defective.

5. Update Graphics & Firmware

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
