@Supernovahq, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your HP camera!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

It sounds like your HP laptop has a built-in electronic privacy shutter that isn’t opening when you turn on the camera. Here are a few things you can try:

Check the Camera Privacy Key

Some HP laptops have a dedicated privacy key (F8 or another function key) that toggles the camera shutter. Try pressing F8 (or Fn + F8) and check if the cover opens.

Restart Your Laptop

A simple restart might reset the privacy shutter and allow it to open properly.

Update/Reinstall Camera Drivers

  1. Right-click on the Start menu and select Device Manager.
  2. Expand Imaging devices or Cameras.
  3. Right-click on your camera and select Update driver.
  4. If updating doesn’t work, try Uninstalling the driver and restarting your laptop to reinstall it automatically.

Check HP Privacy Settings

  • Open HP Command Center (if installed) and look for any privacy settings related to the camera.
  • Some HP models also have HP Privacy Settings in the HP Support Assistant app.

Check Windows Privacy Settings

  1. Go to Settings > Privacy & security > Camera.
  2. Make sure Camera access is enabled.
  3. Scroll down and ensure apps are allowed to access the camera.

BIOS/UEFI Settings

  • Restart your laptop and press Esc/F10 repeatedly to enter BIOS.
  • Look for Advanced settings related to camera privacy and ensure it’s enabled.

If none of these work, let me know your laptop model so I can provide more specific steps! 😊

Take care, and have an amazing day!
