Microsoft Windows 11

My laptop is new, it hasn't been a month since I bought this. Suddenly I notice that the half of my screen is dim and the other half is brighter. It can only be seen in black color like when you on/off the laptop or if you search plain black color/background but in other colors you can't see it. Please help me. Is this a hardware problem? Do I need to change the LCD?

Hi @Shin7

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP laptop display is half dim and half bright, it could be due to a number of reasons such as.

  • Backlight failure: The backlight in your laptop's display could have failed, which can result in uneven brightness. This is a common issue with laptops, especially as they age.
  • Loose or damaged connection: The connection between the display and the motherboard could be loose or damaged, which could result in an uneven display.
  • Graphics card issue: There could be a problem with the graphics card, which could cause uneven brightness.
  • Software issue: It's possible that there is a software issue causing the uneven brightness, such as an incorrect driver or a problem with the operating system.

To try to fix the issue, you could try the following.

  • Adjust the brightness settings: It's possible that the brightness settings are causing the uneven display. Try adjusting the brightness settings to see if that resolves the issue.
  • Update drivers: Check for and update any outdated drivers for your graphics card or display. This could resolve any software issues causing the problem.
  • Check connections: Open up your laptop and check the connection between the display and the motherboard to ensure that it's secure and undamaged.
  • Check the backlight: Use a flashlight to check if the backlight is working. If it's not, it may need to be replaced.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

@alden4

How exactly does one "Use a flashlight to check if the backlight is working".
A little more detail would be helpful - does the laptop need to be dismantled first?...  where does one position the flashlight?
