Microsoft Windows 11

My connected secondary monitor will occasionally flicker black for about 1 second. I notice it is worse when I am dragging things such as dragging files between window explorer windows (but it can still occasionally happen regardless). The monitor only does this when I have it connected through HDMI. When I connect the secondary monitor through my thunderbolt port it does not flicker at all. I have tried various monitors, hdmi cords, and made sure my laptop is up to date (including BIOS). I have tried changing the refresh rate on the monitor(s) and nothing has worked. Does anyone have any insight on why a monitor would flicker when connected via hdmi but not thunderbolt port?

I have had this problem since I bought the laptop new just over a year ago.

Hi @Taco321,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The issue you're experiencing with the flickering secondary monitor on your HP Omen 16 laptop could be related to various factors. Here are some troubleshooting steps and suggestions you can try to address the problem.

  • Update Graphics Drivers: Ensure that your graphics drivers are up to date. Visit the official HP support website or the website of the graphics card manufacturer to download and install the latest drivers for your GPU.
  • Check HDMI Cable and Ports: Make sure the HDMI cable you are using is in good condition and properly connected. Try using a different HDMI cable and connect it to a different HDMI port on your laptop to rule out cable or port issues.
  • Update BIOS: You mentioned that your laptop is up to date, including the BIOS. However, it's worth double-checking if there are any new BIOS updates available. Sometimes, firmware updates can resolve compatibility issues.
  • Power Settings: Check your power settings and make sure they are not causing the issue. Set your laptop to use the High-Performance power plan to ensure maximum performance.
  • Graphics Settings: Open the graphics control panel (NVIDIA Control Panel or AMD Radeon Settings) and check if there are any specific settings related to HDMI output. Experiment with different settings to see if any changes resolve the flickering issue.
  • Windows Display Settings: Right-click on the desktop and select "Display Settings." Ensure that the display settings are configured correctly, including the resolution and refresh rate. Try adjusting these settings to see if it has any impact on the flickering.
  • Check for Interference: Ensure that there are no electronic devices or sources of interference near the HDMI cable. Sometimes, interference from other electronic devices can cause display issues.
  • Graphics Card Control Panel: If you have an NVIDIA or AMD graphics card, check their control panels for additional settings related to multiple displays and HDMI output. Adjusting settings here might help.

By systematically going through these steps, you should be able to narrow down the potential causes of the flickering issue on your secondary monitor when connected via HDMI.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
