HP Spectre x360 - 13-ae019nl
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello,

I have a problem with my clickpad. Sometimes after a few hours of use the two fingers scroll doesn't work anymore. It becomes very slow and whippy and it's really frustrating since I usually read documents on my PC. I tried to downgrade the driver, still had the same problem. I tried downloading the newest driver from the website, still same problem. The only solution I have is to reboot. When the PC turns on everything is normal again, until it stops working again after a while. This is very annoying since I have to close all my work and open it again after the reboot. This happens with all the programs I use and in file explorer, so I guess it's related to the driver that stops working (but the other functions like double finger click or single click or gestures are still working).

I hope somebody knows the solution to this problem and can help me

Thank you for posting on the HP Support Community.

  • Did this happen after a recent window or software update?
  • Did you make any changes to the settings of your PC prior to the issue?

While you respond to that, let's try these steps:

Firstly, perform Hard Reset: Follow steps from the link: https://hp.care/2GnkMa8.

Next step, BIOS default:

  1. Turn off the computer and wait five seconds.
  2. Press the Power button to start the computer and repeatedly press the F10 key to enter the BIOS setup menu.
  3. On the BIOS Setup screen, press F9 to select and load the BIOS Setup Default settings.
  4. Press F10 to Save and Exit.
  5. Use the arrow keys to select Yes, then press Enter when asked Exit Saving Changes?
  6. Follow the prompts to restart your computer. Once it's done uninstall the Touchpad device,

Next, uninstall Touchpad device from device manager.

  1. Press Windows+X to open the menu, and choose Device Manager on it.
  2. In the device manager, expand category "Mice and other pointing devices".
  3. Under this category, right-click on your Synaptics Touchpad driver and click on Uninstall.
  4. You may be required to confirm the uninstallation. Check the box next to "Delete the driver software for this device" and click OK button.
  5. Restart your PC for the change to take effect. After restarting. Windows will attempt to reinstall the driver.
  6. Do not perform any manual upgrades to the driver until it does automatically

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

Thank you for your answer. The solution worked for a while, but after more or less 10 days I started having the same issues. This time it happened right after I turned on my pc. The scroll gesture didn't work and that's why I noticed. I rebooted the system and it worked again. It also happened another time while I was reading documents like before your fix. Is it possible that there was an automatic update of the driver and the new version doesn't work properly? The first 10 days/two weeks after I followed your instructions were perfect with no problems...

Regarding your questions, I don't recall a Windows or software update, but I've been having this problem for a while now, so I guess the computer could have made some updates in the past months.
I didn't change any settings, I just tried to reinstall the driver from the producer's website before writing on the forum but it didn't solve the issue.

Your guidelines surely helped but they were not a definitive resolution apparently. Shall I repeat the steps you mentioned or is there something else I should try before?

Thank you in advance for your time and patience

@Cosimop

Thank you for posting back.

I appreciate your efforts to try and resolve the issue. I would suggest performing system factory reset will put the computer back to the original factory settings in this way all corrupted and outdated software will be removed.

The last thing I can suggest trying to restore the computer back to the factory settings. Performing an HP system recovery (Windows ) While doing the recovery there is an option to backup your personal files. If you have not previously done one now is a good time.

Restoring Files that were Backed Up Using HP Recovery Manager (Windows )You can also contact HP support for assistance. They can remotely access your system to help alleviate difficulties: www.hp.com/contacthp/

The HP Cloud Recovery Tool allows you to download recovery software to a USB drive. You can use the downloaded recovery image file in order to install the Windows operating system.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.
