Hi @TaliaDerosee,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your notebook's screen brightness is flashing and not adjusting correctly, despite restarting, restoring factory settings, and updating the graphics card, there are a few additional troubleshooting steps you can try. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you resolve this issue:
1. Check Brightness Settings
1.1. Adjust Brightness Manually
Windows Settings:
- Right-click on the Desktop and select Display settings.
- Use the Brightness slider to adjust the brightness.
Function Keys:
- Some laptops have function keys (e.g., F1, F2) to adjust brightness. Look for a sun icon on the function keys and use the Fn key along with them to adjust brightness.
2. Update or Reinstall Graphics Drivers
2.1. Update Drivers
- Open Device Manager:
- Press Win + X and select Device Manager.
- Update Graphics Driver:
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click on your graphics card and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for updated driver software.
2.2. Reinstall Graphics Drivers
Uninstall Graphics Driver:
- In Device Manager, right-click on your graphics card and select Uninstall device.
- Restart your laptop. Windows will attempt to reinstall the driver automatically.
Download Latest Driver:
- Visit the graphics card manufacturer’s website (e.g., NVIDIA, AMD, Intel) and download the latest driver for your specific model. Install it and restart your laptop.
3. Check Power Settings
3.1. Adjust Power Plan Settings
- Open Power Options:
- Go to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options.
- Edit Plan Settings:
- Click Change plan settings next to your selected power plan.
- Click Change advanced power settings.
- Under Display, ensure that Enable adaptive brightness is turned off.
4. Check for System Updates
4.1. Run Windows Update
- Open Windows Update:
- Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Check for Updates:
- Click Check for updates and install any available updates.
5. Test in Safe Mode
5.1. Boot into Safe Mode
Restart Laptop:
- Press Shift while clicking Restart from the Start menu.
Enter Safe Mode:
- Go to Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings and click Restart.
- Press 4 or F4 to start in Safe Mode.
Check Brightness:
- Test if the brightness issue persists in Safe Mode. If it doesn’t, the problem might be related to a third-party software or driver.
6. Check for Display Issues
6.1. Connect to an External Monitor
- Test with External Monitor:
- Connect your laptop to an external monitor or TV. If the external display shows the correct brightness, the issue might be with the laptop’s screen or its backlight.
6.2. Inspect for Physical Damage
- Check Screen and Hinges:
- Look for any physical damage to the screen or hinges that might affect the brightness.
7. Perform System Diagnostics
7.1. Run Built-In Diagnostics
- Use HP Diagnostics (if applicable):
- Many HP laptops come with built-in diagnostics tools. Access it through HP Support Assistant or HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.
7.2. Perform a System File Check
- Run System File Checker:
- Open Command Prompt as Administrator.
- Type sfc /scannow and press Enter. This will check for and repair any corrupted system files.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
