I recently lost the Base System Device and now the graphics on my laptop are distorted.  I'm a 77yr silver surfer without much knowledge of how to fix it.

I was told to go into Device Manager and update he Base System Device and the RICOH Bay8Controller.  When I I clicked the update icon on the first one it just never downloaded anything.  I tried three times - the last time waiting 3 hours to see if it would work.  When I tried the RICOH icon it said there was no base system installed.  Then I either lost the place where I shoul look, or can't remember.  Unfortunately I did not write down where I was in the Device Manager screen.

I went on the HP download site but don't know what to download and where it should be.  Please could somebody advise me  - preferably in fairly simple terms?

Many thanks

OK.

You need to install this graphics driver and you should be all set...

This package provides the Intel High-Definition (HD) Graphics Driver with Turbo Boost Technology. The Intel Turbo Boost Technology automatically enables processor cores to run faster than the base operating frequency if the processor is operating below power, current, and temperature specification limits. This package is provided for supported notebook models running a supported operating system.

Hi:

You need this driver for the whole shebang...

This package contains the Ricoh Media Card Reader Driver for the supported notebook models and operating systems. The Ricoh Media Card Reader driver provides support for the following media: Memory Stick, xD-Picture Card, MMC, SD, and SmartCard.

If the graphics are distorted, I suggest you re-install the applicable graphic driver for your model (the Intel or Nvidia one).

Hi please try the following link and download the drivers directly from there. Hope you sort it.  http://h20565.www2.hp.com/portal/site/hpsc/public/psi/swdHome/?lang=en&cc=us&sp4ts.oid=4095876

Sorry to bother you further but:

1.  In terms of the Graphics drivers, how do I find out which one to select - the Intel or NVIDIA (and which one of these should I select)?   Would the latest one work on my laptop as I don't know how old it is?

2.   As I seem to have already downloaded the Ricoh Media Card Reader Driver I take it that this replaces the original Richo Bay8Controller driver?  As this doesn't seem to have fixed the distortion problem I presume I need to concentrate on fixing the graphics driver above?

Thank you, I look forward to your further advice and help.

The driver I posted should have installed both the Base System Device and RICOH Bay8Controller.

It would have no bearing on the graphics issue.

Go to the device manager, click to expand the Display Adapters device manager category, and tell me what you see there.

You should be seeing either an Intel HD graphics adapter, or a Nvidia graphics adapter.

If you see either of those, that means the driver is installed, and unfortunately, I wouldn't know why the graphics is off-kilter.

If you see a Standard VGA Adapter, that means you need to install the graphics driver.

I would have no idea as to which driver you need to install off the top of my head, but there is an easy way to find out.

Please post the hardware ID for the Standard VGA Adapter.

To find the hardware ID, click on the Standard VGA Adapter in the device manager.

Then click on the details tab at the top of the Standard VGA Adapter window.

Now you will see a Property drop down list, and it will be set to Device Description.

Drop down on that list and select the 2nd item (Hardware ID's).

Post the top string of characters that you see in the window.

The Dispaly Adaptors shows  Standard VGA Adaptors.

The top line of the Hardware ID is:  PCI\VEN_80864&DEV_0046&SUBSYS_172A103C&REV_02
