Hi I'm having issues adjusting the settings to connect my HP Laptop 15-db0xxx to an older model LG TV (32LG20). Every time I connect it through an HDMI cable I get "Invalid Format" on my TV and my laptop screen goes black and I can't make any adjustments to the settings. I've tried playing around with the display resolution on my laptop but that has had no effect.
I understand my TV has a much lower resolution (780p) but I was able to connect it to my laptop fine up until mid-January and then I suddenly had this issue. Was their an update at this time that now prevents me from using this type of TV and if so is there any way I can change to settings to get it to work?
Thanks

@Ph1lR Welcome to HP Community!
I understand you are having issues with the display not working when connected to your HP notebook.
Don't worry as I have a few suggestions which should help you resolve this issue.
To provide you with an accurate solution, I'll need a few more details:
Could you provide me with the exact model of the PC? Use this link to find it: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c03754824 (Ensure you do not share any of your personal information such as serial, phone number, email ID, etc...).
Have you recently made any software or hardware changes on the PC before the issue started?
Did it happen after a software or Windows update?
Have you tried to connect using different HDMI cable?
When was the last time it worked without these issues? Have you attempted a system restore?
For now please try these steps:
- Right-Click on start button> click device manager> expand display adapters>then select the display drivers that are listed and right-click on it and uninstall the drivers.
- Check the box that states delete the software for this device.
- Then restart the computer and update the bios chipset and graphic drivers from this link: https://support.hp.com/drivers
If it still does not fix the issue, please perform the relevant steps for HDMI related issues from this link: HP PCs - Troubleshooting HDMI Display and Sound Issues (Windows 10, 8, 7) regarding video issues. If there is no hardware issue with the computer, this should do the trick for you.
HP Notebook PCs - Connecting a Monitor, Projector, or TV (Windows 10, 8, 7)
For a projecting the screen to a wireless display please follow the steps in this document: https://support.hp.com/rs-en/document/c05189396
Please focus on the HDMI issue and try to resolve it first.
Please perform all these steps patiently as it is critical to resolving the issue. The trick is to remain patient, please. Please note that I am not overloading you with a lot of troubleshooting steps. Instead,
just like you, I am eager to ensure that the problem gets resolved. So I am providing you with more resources and information at your disposal to deal with the situation better.
Keep us posted,

Hi @Praveen196 thanks for replying to my post,
Hopefully I can provide you with the extra info you requested.
The model of my laptop is 15-db0108ca,
I didn't make any software or hardware changes when the issue occurred,
I'm not aware of an update (but this is the first thing I thought of and restarted my computer and searched for new updates as soon as it started happening),
the last time it worked properly was around mid-January,
and no I haven't attempted a system restore.
I've tried a different HDMI cable with no success, the laptop also works with an older, smaller TV (but this TV has better resolution - 1080p), and the HDMI ports for the TV that is causing the problem will still work with my cable box that is HDMI connected (I've tried switching all possible combinations of ports).
I deleted my display driver as you suggested and then installed the bios and graphic drivers but still no solution.
I can't do a lot of the troubleshooting options because as soon as I connect the laptop to the TV, the laptop screen goes blank and won't allow me to perform any functions and the TV just says "invalid function". It's definitely a TV issue because the laptop works fine with the other one, but what is confusing me is why did it work fine for the first 4 months after I bought my new laptop and then suddenly stop.
I would prefer to solve the problem and go back to how it was before however it may be time to just upgrade my TV if it's too outdated.
Thanks,

Thank you for the update.
As you have stated that the laptop will work on the other old TV.
The issue with your LG TV.
I would suggest you can upgrade the TV or you can contact LG support and check once.
Have a nice day!!
