HP 17 Laptop PC 17-c2000 (4V791AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

I have had this computer a month but the cursor jumps around in **bleep** and Google Docs and even in this box I am typing in now. I have been through three technicians in India and theyt reinstalled drivers and did other things but t's bu thistill screwed up.

My compter tech friend here in Malibu says this is a problem with HP and Dell computers and it's not fixable.

Now they want me to do a cloud reset which makes me nervous.

It's frustrating. Anyone else had a similar problem?

Hi @THEBENM,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Cursor jumping issues can be quite frustrating, especially on a new laptop. While it’s true that some users have reported similar issues with HP and Dell laptops, there are several steps you can take to try to resolve the problem before considering a factory reset. Here are some suggestions that might help.

Touchpad Sensitivity and Settings:

  • Go to Settings > Devices > Touchpad.
  • Adjust the sensitivity settings. You might want to set it to a lower sensitivity to see if that helps.
  • Disable "Tap to Click" and "Two-finger Tap" to see if that reduces the issue.

Touchpad Drivers:

  • Even though drivers were reinstalled by the technicians, it’s worth trying to update them yourself.
  • Go to Device Manager > Mice and other pointing devices.
  • Right-click on your touchpad device and select Update driver. Choose to search automatically for updated driver software.
  • If no update is found, try visiting the HP support website and manually downloading the latest touchpad driver for your specific laptop model.

Disable Touchpad When External Mouse is Connected:

  • If you use an external mouse, you can disable the touchpad to prevent accidental touches.
  • Go to Settings > Devices > Touchpad and check the box for "Leave touchpad on when a mouse is connected" (uncheck it if you don’t want the touchpad to be active).

Disable Touchpad in BIOS:

  • Restart your laptop and enter the BIOS/UEFI settings (usually by pressing Esc, F2, F10, or Del during startup).
  • Look for an option to disable the touchpad. This can be useful if you always use an external mouse.

Check for Windows Updates:

  • Ensure that your Windows 11 is up to date as updates often include fixes for hardware compatibility issues.
  • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and check for updates.

Malware and Virus Scan:

  • Sometimes, malware can cause erratic behavior.
  • Run a full system scan using Windows Defender or another reputable antivirus software.

Perform a Clean Boot:

  • This helps to determine if background programs are causing the issue.
  • Press Windows + R, type msconfig, and hit Enter.
  • In the System Configuration window, go to the Services tab, check Hide all Microsoft services, and then click Disable all.
  • Go to the Startup tab and click on Open Task Manager.
  • In Task Manager, disable all startup items.
  • Restart your computer and see if the issue persists.

If these steps don’t resolve the problem, performing a cloud reset might be a viable option, even though it can be nerve-wracking. A cloud reset reinstalls Windows but keeps your personal files. It might help to resolve any deep-seated software issues that could be causing the cursor jumping problem.

To perform a cloud reset.

  1. Go to Settings > System > Recovery.
  2. Under Reset this PC, click Get started.
  3. Choose Keep my files.
  4. Select Cloud download to reinstall Windows from the cloud.

Ensure you have a backup of your important files before proceeding, just in case.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
