HERE WE GO AGAIN;  Just got my new laptop and with back light key board and I can't find any way to adjust it so the light will stay on.   I've gone through the previous links and even called HP.  I like the computer and frankly don't want to return it but this is just driving me crazy (LOL).  Anybody have a 2020 answer on how to fix this or get a 3rd party download to make it adjustable?

Bob,

Normally I do not advise people to return computers - in most cases, people know what they purchased and have already considered the benefits and limitations of the choices they have made.

Having said that... Consumer level systems, including the HP 15-dw1000 Laptop PC series, do not include access to the BIOS Advanced section where the keyboard time settings are located.

Restart into BIOS – Set backlit keyboard “always” on

Restart > while screen blank, repeat ESC key until menu starts

BIOS setup

Advanced > Built-In Device Options >

Scroll down, set Backlit keyboard timeout = Never

Click back to Main (menu), select Save changes and exit

Comments and additional information

Business class (commercial) grade systems include advanced options, including the ability to control how long the backlit keyboard stays lit.

Business class (commercial) grade systems do cost more up front.  In general, business class machines:

(as mentioned) provide advanced options,

include better warranty,

provide additional in-field repair options, higher grade components,

provide additional security options (use is optional),

include additional update and installation options.

Better is not free, in other words.  For the money, the option(s) you seek are "out there".

This is one of those situations where the how-to document mentions that a particular feature might not be supported on every computer.  The document does not offer an exact explanation for you because the document is not written for YOUR computer.

Discussion

In general, and there might be exceptions,

  • Business class computers offer the BIOS Advanced section.
  • Examples of business class systems include and are not limited to:  Zbook Mobile Workstations, ProBook, EliteBook, and others.
  • The backlit keyboard timeout option is included in the Advanced section as appropriate (system has a backlit keyboard).

  • At this writing, consumer class systems do not include the backlit keyboard timeout feature.
  • Examples of consumer grade systems include and are not limited to:  Spectre, Pavilion, Envy, Notebook.

HP Note

BIOS configurations vary depending on the computer. For further information on a specific computer, refer to the documentation provided with the computer or go to the appropriate document for your PC.

Thank you for your reply.  It kind of reminds me of when you buy a car...you have to compare "standard equipment for the price BUT what you are implying is that the more you pay, the more adjustments  you  have.  Like buying a radio for cheap but it is set only on one station (LOL).  SO, I don't accept the notion that the keyboard back light adjustment is something that only comes with higher end computers.  It should be "standard equipment".

You are welcome.

Well, I could be wrong about the setting.  I have not found a consumer grade computer on which the Advanced BIOS options are available.  I do not spend time looking closely at the at all the specifications - things might have changed and / or I might have missed something.

I also agree about backlit keyboard time-out being standard equipment - this particular option (or lack of same) drives people nuts and most consumers do not know the difference until it is too late.

If you have the patience, the budget, and the wherewithal to tolerate the process, getting what you want might be worth the hassle.

Good Luck.

I am sorry the answer was "No" - this is our least favorite answer.
