HP 15-gw0000 Laptop PC (1E421AV)
Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)

When i press a key to type, i have to hold down the key for almost a second without releasing it before it appears on the screen.  i bought an external keyboard to see if it would override the laptop problem, but it does the same thing.

Hi @LindaA10,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like the keyboard lag issue might be due to a system or software problem rather than a hardware defect. Here are some steps you can try to resolve the issue.

Update Keyboard Drivers:

  • Go to Device Manager (you can search for it in the Start menu).
  • Find "Keyboards" and right-click on the listed keyboard.
  • Select "Update driver" and follow the prompts to search automatically for updated drivers.

Check for Windows Updates:

  • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
  • Click "Check for updates" and install any available updates.

Adjust Keyboard Settings:

  • Go to Settings > Ease of Access > Keyboard.
  • Ensure "Filter Keys" is turned off. This feature can cause delays in keyboard input.

Test in Safe Mode:

  • Restart your laptop and press F8 (or Shift + F8) to enter Safe Mode.
  • Check if the keyboard lag persists in Safe Mode. If not, it might be a software conflict.

Check for Background Processes:

  • Open Task Manager (press Ctrl + Shift + Esc) and check for any high CPU or memory usage.
  • End any unnecessary processes that might be affecting performance.

Perform a System Scan:

  • Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
  • Run sfc /scannow to check for and repair corrupted system files.

Reset or Reinstall Windows:

  • If none of the above steps work, you might consider resetting or reinstalling Windows as a last resort.

If the problem persists after trying these steps, there might be an underlying hardware issue with the laptop’s internal keyboard.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
