Troubleshooting black screen issues on HP Notebooks: Click here to view the instructions!
HP Recommended

I have an HP Envy 17-ch2045cl (Product Number 646R0UA) running Windows 11. My laptop is connected to an external monitor. Every time I switch tabs, click into a different window, or change focus, my laptop screen briefly dims or changes brightness, while the external monitor stays normal. I want both screens to stay at the same, consistent brightness at all times.

This has never happened before and started randomly. It’s extremely distracting and makes it feel like the brightness is constantly changing depending on what I’m clicking.

What I’ve already tried:

  • Adjusting brightness manually

  • Checking Windows display and brightness settings

  • Disabling adaptive brightness

  • Going through Intel Graphics settings

  • Uninstalling recent updates

  • Restarting multiple times

  • Plugging and unplugging the external monitor

  • Making sure both displays are set to the same brightness level

None of this has fixed the issue. The laptop screen still dims whenever I change tabs or windows.

I want adaptive or automatic brightness behavior completely disabled, and for both screens to remain the same brightness at all times, regardless of which app or tab is active.
