My HP Laptop Pavilion 15CB is not connecting to an external monitor which is Dell S2240L it is showing going in power saving mode. I have tried everything. I connected it via HDMI port. I have tried updating my drivers. My monitor is working with some other PC and my laptop is also connecteing to a projector with same HDMI wire and it is also working. Please help.

Hi @Vyom8,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Sorry for the inconvenience caused don’t worry let me help you.

To better understand the issue, could you please provide a few more details?

  • When you connect the Dell monitor, does Windows detect it at all in Display Settings, or is it completely absent?
  • Have you tried using a different HDMI port mode (if your monitor has multiple inputs like HDMI/VGA)?
  • Does the monitor show “No signal” before going into power saving, or does it stay blank?

 Troubleshooting Steps You Can Try:

  • Check Display Settings: Right‑click on the desktop → Display settings → Detect. Sometimes Windows doesn’t auto‑recognize the monitor.
  • Force Projection Mode: Press Windows + P and cycle through Duplicate, Extend, and Second screen only. This can force the laptop to send a signal.
  • Update Graphics Drivers: Even if you updated drivers, try downloading the latest directly from NVIDIA/AMD/Intel (depending on your Pavilion 15CB’s GPU).
  • Monitor Input Source: On the Dell S2240L, manually select HDMI as the input source from the monitor’s on‑screen menu. Auto‑detect can fail occasionally.
  • Try Lower Resolution: Set your laptop’s display to a lower resolution (like 1920x1080) before connecting. Some monitors reject unsupported resolutions.
  • BIOS & Firmware Updates: Check HP’s support site for BIOS updates and Dell’s site for monitor firmware updates.
  • Test with Another HDMI Port/Adapter: If your laptop has USB‑C, try a USB‑C to HDMI adapter to rule out issues with the HDMI port.

I hope this helps.

Hi @Vyom8,

Thanks for your response.

Further Troubleshooting Steps

  1. Check Device Manager
    • Press Windows + X → Device Manager → Display adapters.
    • Right‑click your graphics adapter (Intel/NVIDIA/AMD) → Uninstall device (check “Delete driver software”).
    • Restart your laptop and reinstall the latest driver directly from the GPU manufacturer’s website.
  2. Test Monitor on Another Input
    • If your Dell S2240L has multiple HDMI ports, try switching to the other port.
    • Alternatively, test with a DisplayPort‑to‑HDMI adapter if your laptop supports DisplayPort over USB‑C.
  3. Force Detection via Intel/NVIDIA Control Panel
    • Open your graphics control panel (Intel Graphics Command Center or NVIDIA Control Panel).
    • Look for “Detect Displays” or “Set up multiple displays” and manually force detection.
  4. Run HP UEFI Diagnostics
    • Restart your laptop and press Esc → F2 to enter diagnostics.
    • Run the Display/Video test to confirm the HDMI port is functioning correctly.
  5. Try Safe Mode
  • Boot into Safe Mode and connect the monitor. If it works there, a background driver or app may be interfering in normal mode.

If after these steps the monitor still isn’t detected, it may point to a hardware issue with the HDMI port on the laptop
