HP USB-C to HDMI 2.0 Adapter 2PC54AA#ABL and HP Pavilion 15-cs3096nr
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I recently ordered an HP Pavilion 15-cs3096nr laptop.  For whatever reason, Intel laptops seem to be stuck on HDMI 1.4 (even this one, which has a 10nm Ice Lake chip in it).  I was wondering if I could use a USB-C to HDMI adapter like this HP USB-C to HDMI 2.0 Adapter 2PC54AA#ABL to gain an HDMI 2.0 port:

https://store.hp.com/us/en/pdp/hp-pavilion-usb-c%E2%84%A2-to-hdmi-20-adapter

The specs page for the above adapter says:

Minimum system requirements
Available USB-C™ port.

Great, the PC has that.  But, the USB-C port on the specs page for the laptop (https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-pavilion-15-cs3000-laptop-pc-series/29133460/model/31596369/...) makes no mention of supporting DisplayPort/Thunderbolt/etc over USB-C:

External ports
1 USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-C™ (Data Transfer Only, 5 Gb/s signaling rate); 2 USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-A (Data Transfer Only); 1 AC smart pin; 1 HDMI 1.4b; 1 headphone/microphone combo; 1 RJ-45

Is the minimum requirement for this adapter really just any old USB Type-C port?  Or is there some additional optional (or maybe not-optional-in-the-USB-spec-but-removed-by-HP-to-save-some-money) feature/extension of USB-C needed for this adapter?  I don't need 4 8K monitors connected at 150Hz, but it would be nice if there were a way to drive a 4K display at 60Hz with 4:4:4 chroma subsampling (i.e. no subsampling) on occasion.

Are you talking about the HP Pavilion - 15-cs3096nr ? Its specs

    https://support.hp.com/au-en/document/c06474274

as you ALREADY know it only has

       1 USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-C™ (Data Transfer Only, 5 Gb/s signaling rate) port

That port works similar to USB 3.1/USB 3.0 only it has a different shape. It does not support Alt mode therefore USB-C to HDMI won't work.

>>>> Is the minimum requirement for this adapter really just any old USB Type-C port?

No, as mentioned above, it won't work with USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type C which does not support Alt mode. Driver won't fix this.

One of the following docks should be able to support 4K external monitor

      https://www.displaylink.com/products/find?cat=1&res=3840x2160&num=1&vid_hdmi=1&usbc=1

Note: You can select the one which uses Type A  port.

Regards.

Thanks.  It sounds like HP should update their product page for their USB-C to HDMI adapter.
