Hello,

Very recently my laptop screen started to flick on off very badly whenever I shut down my PC and then subsequently turn it on. The problem resolves itself when I then restart the PC. However I am afraid one day it will flicker and I wont be able to restart the laptop.

Notable actions which I did in the last few hours and days :

1. I disabled the Microsoft Click-to-run Sxs because it was consuming upward of 40% of my CPU capacity. I did this from the services app ( opened running services.msc ). Re-enabling the process has not undone the problem.

2. I recently enabled WSL2 and have been running ubuntu 20.04 LTS.

As a solution I tried reinstalling my graphics drivers as stated here : https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Software-and-How-To-Questions/Intel-Graphics-620-will-not-upd...

Of course I used Intel UHD drivers as I am running a 10th i5

I would prefer if I did not have to do a clean install of windows as I dont have anything to back up my device at the moment.

@Tigas1

Thank you for posting on the HP Support Community.

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, however, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:

  • When was the last time it worked without these issues?
  • Have you updated Graphics and Chipset drivers?
  • Have you checked the display on an external monitor?

Let’s try these steps to resolve the problem:

I recommend you attempt to access the BIOS screen by tapping on F10 while the computer is restarting,

If the issue persists in the BIOS screen which is outside windows, it would confirm a hardware failure.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

I would like to preface this by saying I seem to have solved the problem by turning off windows fast start up however I am not sure whether this is a permanent solution. For the sake of posterity I will still provide all the information to the questions you asked.

The last time it worked was about 12 hours before the problem occurred.

I had manually and automatically updated my graphics drivers.

I do not possess an external monitor so that is out of the question.

The weird bit was that the problem would resolve itself on restart. It was most likely a driver issue but my drivers were working fine and the full check provided by hp support software was also clear. I had a eureka moment and realized fast startup may hold the key and found that indeed in fast startup drivers are not loaded from scratch. However WHY did the drivers corrupt on startup in the first place I have no idea and maybe you could solve that.

As of now I am facing no issues and I have rolled back my windows update. Would it be possible that you could provide further tips to analyse what went wrong in the first place. I am quite nervous and have no intention of enabling fast startup to recreate the problem

Thank you for posting back.

I am glad to know that you managed to resolve the issue. To get the answer to this question, due to software related issue computer might function glitchy. However, keeping your system up to date will resolve this issue in the future.

Perform Windows Update and HP Support Assistant: (do not skip any troubleshooting steps if you feel steps are repeating)

To check for updates now, select the Start button, and then go to Settings  > Update & security  > Windows Update, and select Check for updates.

Install updates from HP Support Assistant: Go to Download HP Support Assistant to install the tool.

  1. To open HP Support Assistant, double-click the HP Support Assistant icon https://support.hp.com/doc-images/932/c05040382.jpg.
  2. Click My devices in the top menu, and then click Updates in the My PC or My notebook pane.
  3. Click Check for updates and messages to scan for new updates.
  4. Review the list of updates. Updates with a yellow information icon are recommended. Updates with a blue information icon are optional.
  5. Click the update name for a description, version number, and file size.
  6. Select the box next to any updates you want to install, and then click Download and install.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.
