Hi! @ybarrae, Thanks for stopping by the HP Support Forums!

I understand the laptop screen goes randomly black.

Don't worry I'll try to help you out.

Did you make any software or hardware changes on your PC?

Have you tried checking with a different battery or adapter?

Is your laptop getting overheated?

Does the issue persist when you are at BIOS page?

Do you see a black screen with blinking cursor on your PC?

I appriciate your efforts for trying out the steps before reaching out to us.

Try updating the BIOS and graphics drivers on your PC using HP support assistant.

Refer this article to know more information about using the HP support assistant.

Try restoring the BIOS to default and check if it helps.

  1. Turn off the computer and wait five seconds.
  2. Press the Power button to start the computer and repeatedly press the F10 key to enter the BIOS setup menu.
  3. On the BIOS Setup screen, press F9 to select and load the BIOS Setup Default settings.
  4. Press F10 to Save and Exit.
  5. Use the arrow keys to select Yes, then press Enter when asked Exit Saving Changes?
  6. Follow the prompts to restart your computer.

Try the steps recommended below.

1. Use Windows shortcut keys Win + PauseBreak to open the System window.

2. Select Advanced system settings from the left column and the System Properties will pop up.

3. Choose Advanced tab and click on the button Settings in the Startup and Recovery section.

4. Disable Automatically restart under System Failure, and then click OK.

1. Right-click on the Start menu and select Power Options. You can also access to this by right click on the battery icon in the taskbar if you are using a laptop.

2. Click on the Change plan settings beside the current plan the PC is using.

3. Click on the Change advanced power settings.

4. Navigate to and expand the Processor power management.

5. Expand the Minimum processor state and set the values lower than 100%. And then click OK.

6. Modify the Put the computer to sleep setting when using power or battery. Set the time value between 1 minute and 5 hours.

7. Save the changes and reboot.

Also, try running a system diagnostics test on your PC and check if the hardware components on your PC are working fine.

@ybarrae, thanks for your quick response and time.

You did a marvelous job by trying out the steps recommended previously.

Did you try running a system diagnostics test on your PC?

And by not wasting much your time. As you mentioned the issue persists when you unplug the charger from your laptop.

As I requested in my previous post, please share the product number of your PC to assist you better.

Try the steps recommended below.

Try checking for "Sleep Mode" issues... Sometimes they are set to turn off the display when running only on battery, or when plugged in to charge, etc.

1. Go into "Control Panel" and click the "Power Options".
2. Next to the plan that is currently selected click "Change Plan Settings".
3. Now click "Change Advanced Power Settings".
4. Locate the option for running on battery and make sure it is set to never sleep.
5. Change/set it to allow.
6. Click "OK".
7. Finally shut down and power up the computer.

Also, try the steps recommended below.

1) go into your power settings, by right clicking your battery icon.

2)  Then choose to change the settings of either "balance/energy star power" or "Power saving"   Doesn't matter which one.

3)  Once you do that, go to "change advanced settings" (should be above where you adjust screen brightness).

4) Then go to the left side and choose the option that says "Intel HD graphics" and click there and CHANGE the setting away from "maximize battery" and change it to "maximize performance".

HP ZBook G4 17" Dreamcolour [18mths new].
I have exactly the same problem; random black screen - the only thing I can do is reboot the system. It's getting more frequent; now about 1-2 times daily. Prior to the black screen issue, the computer would just randomly restart for no reason at all! Prior to that issue; the display would randomly disappear then throw up the screen in thin film strips [four or five across the screen - on black background] - then would come right after a few seconds... obviously these are related.

Right throughout all this I've updated drivers, bios, etc - even talked to HP tech who wanted me to 'screen capture the events!!!' [it's random, right? Black is black!]. Extremely frustrating for a HP Flagship Workstation Machine...

I done pretty much all as suggested in this thread. HP; we trusted your product - time to fix this issue once and for all before my computer dies... Where do we go from here???

I have been having this issue since Week 1 of my new HP Pavilion. It goes black basically every time I play a video game, on a laptop that was billed as being able to play some games.

I think I may have solved my black-out screen issue...
I went into 'Windows Event Viewer'; found a few conflicts, then Googled and found the fixes. Have included a YouTube link I found on using event viewer [for anyone that's may not be familiar] and what to do...

I fixed three critical issues and had no problems since then. Hope this helps someone [would have been nice if HP had suggested this in the first instance!]   🙂
