Hi everyone,
I am having an issue where my MPP2.0 pen draws before it touches the screen. When it's in contact it works fine - it has pressure sensitivity, flows correctly, and is calibrated to the correct position. However, as I pull my hand away from the screen, it leaves a small trail of dots, almost like the pen is slowly disconnecting. I've attached a video below showing what I've been dealing with.
For reference, this is on a 4-month-old 14" Spectre X360, with a 2-month old MPP2.0 pen that has only been used a couple times. I have found a few forums and reddit posts about this issue, but most are old and the solutions aren't available (windows ink settings, etc). So far i have charged the pen, reinstalled all drivers and (of course) restarted the PC multiple times. I have no idea what to do next and would really appreciate some help.
Thank you

Hi @Jake_B1
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you're dealing with a frustrating issue with your MPP2.0 pen on your HP Spectre x360, where the pen leaves a trail of dots or seems to be drawing slightly before it touches the screen. This issue can be caused by several factors, including driver conflicts, settings, or even hardware issues. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try to resolve the problem:
1. Check for Interference or Screen Protector
- Screen Protector: If you're using a screen protector, make sure it’s not interfering with the pen's signal. Some screen protectors can disrupt the pen’s pressure sensitivity and tracking, leading to ghosting or unintended marks.
- Electromagnetic Interference: Ensure there are no devices nearby that could be causing interference, such as other electronic devices with strong magnetic fields.
2. Disable "Pen and Touch" Settings in Windows
Sometimes, certain Windows touch or pen-related settings can cause erratic behavior with pens. Try the following:
- Open Settings.
- Go to Devices > Pen & Windows Ink.
- In the Pen section, turn off any settings related to "Ignore touch input when I'm using my pen". This can sometimes help with the issue of unwanted pen activation.
- Additionally, in Windows Ink Workspace, you can toggle the "Use Windows Ink" settings to see if they affect your pen's behavior.
3. Calibrate the Pen
If the pen is not calibrated correctly, it may behave erratically. You can try recalibrating the pen in Windows:
- Open the Control Panel.
- Go to Hardware and Sound > Tablet PC Settings.
- Under the Display tab, select Calibrate.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to calibrate the pen.
4. Update the Drivers and Firmware
You mentioned reinstalling drivers, but it's worth checking if there are any updates for your device's pen and touchscreen drivers. Even if you’ve already reinstalled, sometimes manufacturers release firmware or driver updates to resolve specific issues:
- Go to HP Support and check for any available updates for your Spectre x360, especially those related to the Pen or Touchscreen.
- You can also update Windows Ink and Wacom drivers (if applicable) via Device Manager or by visiting the Wacom website directly for the latest drivers.
- In Device Manager, find the pen or HID devices under the Human Interface Devices section. Right-click and select Update driver to ensure you have the latest version.
5. Check Pen Settings and Sensitivity
Some pens have built-in settings that can be adjusted through software. Check to see if your MPP2.0 pen has an associated software that might allow you to adjust settings like pen sensitivity or activation pressure. If the pen is too sensitive, it could cause accidental drawing while hovering near the screen.
6. Test with Another Application
I hope this helps.
Please mark this post as “Accepted Solution” if the issue is resolved and if you feel this reply was helpful click “Yes”.
