I just got a new external monitor and for some reason I can’t make it work with either of my 16” M1 Pro or 16” M1 Max MacBook Pros. 

Luckily I have 3 external monitors I could test on. HP E231, E232 and E233. Also one other 2018 15” MBP besides the two already mentioned.

Both HP E231 and HP E232 work perfectly fine with all 3 Macbooks via HDMI cable direct or with dongle, DisplayPort to USB-C or DisplayPort to HDMI (direct for M1 mac and via dongle for 2018 mac)

 

The monitor I want to use, HP E233 works fine using any connection type with 2018 15” MBP but doesn’t work with (the setup I have on my desk) DisplayPort to USB-C or DisplayPort to HDMI. I get “Input signal not found” on the monitor even if it appears under System Preferences -> Displays. I also managed to make the connection work between HP E233 and M1 Max MBP using DisplayPort to HDMI connected via dongle.
