HP Universal USB-C Multiport Hub
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have an HP Omen 16t-b100. I connect to it the HP Universal USB-C Multiport Hub so I can connect two 2-input Dell monitors (one via HDMI, the other via an HDMI-displayport adapter), a USB extender that connects a USB mouse, a USB keyboard, and a speaker bar, and an external hard drive. I have used this setup for years, and all inputs have worked fine. Today, after updating my Avast antivirus, the monitors are no longer connecting to my laptop via the hub.

All other inputs still work fine. I have repaired Avast, uninstalled and reinstalled, and done a reboot of the hub by disconnecting all devices and reconnecting, starting with the USB-C connecting from the hub to the laptop. I know the monitors are working, because I can connect another laptop to them via a hub (both inputs work), and I can also connect a monitor directly to my laptop via  an HDMI cable.

I've tried swapping out one of the HDMI cables for another one that I know works. Nothing. I've checked for system updates as well. Nothing. I know the monitors are working, because when I disconnect and reconnect them from the hub, it searches briefly for a display input.

Any suggestions for how I can get my laptop to read the monitors via the hub again?

Hi @Zooropa94,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

You've mentioned that after updating Avast, your external monitors connected via the HP Universal USB-C Multiport Hub are no longer recognized by your laptop. However, other peripherals connected through the hub, such as your mouse, keyboard, speaker bar, and external hard drive, continue to function correctly. Additionally, the monitors work when connected directly to the laptop or through the hub with another laptop.

This suggests that the issue may be related to the USB-C hub's video output functionality on your HP OMEN 16t-b100, potentially affected by recent software updates.

1. Perform a Hard Reset of Your Laptop:

  • Shut down your laptop.
  • Disconnect all external devices, including the USB-C hub.
  • Unplug the AC adapter.
  • Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds to drain residual power.
  • Reconnect the AC adapter and power on the laptop.

2. Update Graphics and USB Drivers:

  • Visit the HP Support website and navigate to the driver section for your HP OMEN 16t-b100.
  • Download and install the latest graphics drivers (both integrated and dedicated, if applicable) and USB drivers.

3. Check for Windows Updates:

  • Go to Settings > Windows Update and ensure your system is up to date.
  • Install any pending updates and restart your laptop.

4. Test the Hub on Another System:

  • Connect the HP Universal USB-C Multiport Hub to another compatible laptop and check if the monitors are recognised.
  • This will help determine if the hub itself is functioning correctly.

5. Check Display Settings:

  • Right-click on the desktop and select Display settings.
  • Click on Detect to see if the monitors are recognised.
  • Ensure that the display mode is set to Extend or Duplicate, as desired.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi Vikram,

Thank you for the troubleshooting tips! I tried all of these steps, but my laptop still is not detecting the external monitors when the hub is connected. I tried the hub on a different laptop, and it detects the monitors. I also updated the drivers for my hub, and that did not fix the issue.

Is there anything else I can try?

Updating this to add that I have also tested the following:

-A generic USB-C hub from Amazon. Laptop did not detect the monitors.

-HP USB-C Dock G5. Laptop did not detect the monitors, either before or after updating the firmware via HP Support.

-HP Thunderbolt Dock 120W G4. Laptop FINALLY detected the monitors when connected to this device. Monitors were detected both before and after updating the firmware.

I really do not want to have to purchase a $200+ dock when the USB-C hub had been working until very recently. Could you please advise what I can try next to get the laptop to detect the monitors via my existing HP USB-C hub? Thank you.
