The Mouse Touch Pad on my computer has stopped working. I have done a full lap of all the software based options uninstalling and reinstalling drivers and updating drivers etc. The computer is two years old and out of warranty but gets very minimal use so mind mind is blown that it is likely a hardware issue. Has anyone had this problem? And what did you do?

Hi @ODeorain

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

It’s frustrating when a touchpad stops working, especially on a device that hasn’t been heavily used. Since you've already tried software-based solutions like reinstalling and updating drivers, here are some additional steps to determine if it's a hardware issue:

1. Check Touchpad Settings

  • Open Settings > Bluetooth & Devices > Touchpad.
  • Ensure the touchpad is enabled.
  • If an external mouse is connected, disable the option "Leave touchpad on when a mouse is connected."

2. Run Windows Troubleshooter

  • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot.
  • Select Additional Troubleshooters > Touchpad and run the troubleshooter.

3. Check Device Manager

  • Press Win + X and select Device Manager.
  • Expand Mice and other pointing devices.
  • Right-click the touchpad driver and select Update Driver.
  • If updating doesn’t work, try Uninstalling the driver and restarting your laptop.

4. Perform a Hard Reset

  • Turn off the laptop and unplug it.
  • Hold the power button for 30 seconds.
  • Plug it back in and turn it on.

5. Check BIOS Settings

  • Restart your laptop and press F10 to enter BIOS.
  • Navigate to Advanced > Built-in Device Options.
  • Ensure Touchpad is enabled.

6. External Test

  • If possible, connect a USB mouse to confirm whether the issue is isolated to the touchpad.

7. Hardware Inspection

  • If none of the above steps work, the touchpad may have a loose connection or physical damage.
  • If you're comfortable, you can open the laptop and check the touchpad ribbon cable for any disconnections.
