Hi @BrianInHamilton,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds frustrating to have dealt with mouse pointer flickering for so long, especially across multiple devices and attempts at troubleshooting. Since you’ve already tried most forum suggestions, we can approach this systematically to rule out possible causes or try alternative solutions.
Here are some focused areas to explore that might help resolve the issue.
Check for Conflicting Drivers or Devices
- Device Manager: Open the Device Manager and check for any conflicting or outdated drivers related to your mouse, touchpad, or display drivers. Update or reinstall these drivers.
- Right-click the Start button, select Device Manager, and expand the Mice and other pointing devices and Display adapters sections.
- Disable touchpad: On your HP ENVY x360, try disabling the touchpad (sometimes a conflict between the touchpad and external mouse can cause flickering).
- Go to Settings > Devices > Touchpad, and turn it off temporarily.
Windows 11 Incompatibility or Updates
- Windows Update: Make sure Windows 11 is fully updated, including optional updates. There may be patches or fixes in more recent updates that address input or display issues.
- Roll back updates: If the issue coincided with a major Windows update, consider rolling back to an earlier version of Windows 11.
- Go to Settings > Update & Security > Recovery, and select Go back.
Disable Display Effects
- Graphics Driver: Outdated or incompatible graphics drivers can cause flickering issues, especially with hardware acceleration.
- Update your GPU drivers: Through Device Manager, check for the latest updates or visit the manufacturer’s website.
- Turn off hardware acceleration:
- In Windows Settings, go to Display > Graphics settings, and toggle off Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling.
Adjust Mouse Settings
- Mouse pointer options: Go to Settings > Devices > Mouse > Additional mouse options. Under the Pointer Options tab, disable Enhance pointer precision and check if the flickering stops.
Interference from External Devices
- Check for external devices: USB devices, docking stations, or wireless peripherals could interfere with the mouse’s function.
- Unplug all peripherals and check if the flickering persists.
Test with Different USB Ports or Wireless Dongles
- If it affects all mouses, wired or wireless, try using different USB ports, especially if your devices have both USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 ports.

Check Power Settings
- USB selective suspend: Sometimes Windows power settings can cause USB devices to behave erratically.
- Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings, expand USB settings, and set USB selective suspend setting to Disabled.
Third-Party Software Conflicts
- Disable startup programs: Some third-party software or drivers that run in the background might conflict with the mouse.
- Open Task Manager, go to the Startup tab, and disable non-essential startup programs. Restart your system and check if the issue persists.
System File Corruption
- Run SFC and DISM: Corrupt system files can lead to hardware issues.
- Open Command Prompt as an administrator and run the following commands:
- sfc /scannow
- DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Open Command Prompt as an administrator and run the following commands:
Test with a Different OS (Windows 10 or Linux)
- Since your Sony Vaio running Windows 10 doesn't have the issue, consider downgrading to Windows 10 or even booting a Linux live USB to test whether the problem persists. This would help determine if it’s specific to Windows 11.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
