Hello, I'm having trouble with my HP Notebook PC.

My screen keeps flickering, and when I move my mouse over it, the flickering gets worse.   The screen keeps going black as well.

I've tried running a restart, removing apps (that I don't use), and I've tried different key combinations.

Could someone please tell me what to do?

Hi @Jay6469,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Sorry for the inconvenience caused don’t worry let me help you.

To better understand the issue, could you please provide a few more details?

  • Does the flickering happen only when using the built‑in display, or also when connected to an external monitor?
  • Did this issue start after a recent Windows update, driver update, or any physical impact to the device?

 Troubleshooting steps you can try:

  1. Update Graphics Drivers
    • Open Device Manager → expand Display adapters.
    • Right‑click your graphics card  → Update driver.
    • Alternatively, download the latest drivers directly from HP’s support website for your notebook model.
  2. Run HP Hardware Diagnostics
    • Restart your notebook and press Esc → then F2 for System Diagnostics.
    • Run the Display Test to check if the hardware is functioning properly.
  3. Test with External Monitor
    • Connect your notebook to an external display.
    • If the external monitor works fine, the issue may be with the notebook’s built‑in screen or cable.
  4. BIOS Update
    • Visit HP’s support site, enter your notebook model, and check if a BIOS update is available. Sometimes BIOS updates resolve display stability issues.
  5. Safe Mode Check
  • Boot into Safe Mode (press F11 at startup → Troubleshoot → Advanced Options → Startup Settings).
  • If flickering stops in Safe Mode, the issue is likely driver‑related rather than hardware.

I hope this helps.
