HP Pavilion Notebook - 15-ab035tx
Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

Whenever I reboot my notebook, the system is unable to detect the NVIDIA graphics card. I open the NVIDIA Control Panel, I get the following message:

NVIDIA Display settings are not available.

An NVIDIA graphics card was not detected.

After that I open the device manager and I am not able to find NVIDIA GeForce 940M under Display adapters. Then I switch to Show hidden devices in View tab and I am able to see a translucent NVIDIA GeForce 940M icon under Display adapters. I check the device status and I get the following message:

Currently, this hardware device is not connected to the computer. (Code 45)

To fix this problem, reconnect this hardware device to the computer.

But sometimes after repeated reboots the system is able to detect the Card though I face the same issue again the next day(whenever the system is shutdown for 5-6 hrs). The detection of the card seems to be random.

I have tried updating the graphics driver, BIOS drivers, safe booting, etc., nothing seems to work. Neither Windows or Ubuntu OS are able to detect the card.

Is there anyone who has experienced this type of issue and resolved it? Or someone with expertise with these kind of issues who can help me out.

@ardhendu-sekhar,

I reviewed your post and I understand that the graphics card is not getting detected on the computer.

Don’t worry, I assure you I will try my best to get this sorted.

What is the version of BIOS installed on your computer?

Is the graphics card getting detected in BIOS?

Meanwhile, I recommend you run a system test on the computer following the steps in the below article to make sure whether it is software or a hardware issue.

@The_Fossette,

Please find below the info about my BIOS:

BIOS Name: Insyde

BIOS Version: F.91

I was not able to check if the BIOS was able to detect my Video card are not since my Advanced tab is disabled in my notebook by HP. I also ran the system tests using the diagnostic tool and all the tests were passed. I guess the Video Memory Check was passed as my system is considering Intel HD Graphics 5500 as the video driver instead of NVIDIA GeForce 940M

@The_Fossette,

I found a temporary solution to the issue. The card gets detected whenever I connect and disconnect the HDMI cable and then restart the notebook.

Do you have  any idea why this maybe happening?
