My I2C HID device is showing an error in Device Manager. The device status displays "This device cannot start (Code 10)" along with the message: "A request for the HID descriptor failed. This typically occurs when there is a problem with the device firmware."

I have already attempted the following troubleshooting steps without success:

  • Uninstalled the device in Device Manager and re-enabled it by scanning for hardware changes
  • Searched for driver updates both automatically through Windows Update and manually – no updates were found
  • Performed a hard reset of the system

The Hardware ID is ACPI\VEN_ELAN&DEV_07ED.

I would appreciate any further assistance or guidance on how to resolve this issue.

Hey, @Kuroi_Kenshi

The serial number is: Edited I've tried the hard reset and the troubleshooting tool, and there have been about five software updates since the problem first occurred. It might be important to know that the problem occurred when I closed and opened the laptop again, and then when I uninstalled and reinstalled the driver, it worked again, but that also stopped working after 3–4 days.
Thanks for your help.
Best regards,
CGR

Thank you for your response.

May I know if you have updated the BIOS driver for your laptop?

Official HP® Support, kindly update the BIOS driver and check.

NOTE: While updating the BIOS driver, kindly connect the power adapter to the unit.

Hey Jerry,

I updated the BIOS and the BIOS driver, but the touchpad is still not working. The I2C HID Device still shows Code 10 in Device Manager. Do you have any other ideas on how to fix this?
Best Regards,
CGR

Hi @CGR7,

Thank you for the response.

Run HP UEFI Hardware Diagnostics

Confirms whether the touchpad hardware is responding at firmware level.

Power on > Press Esc > F2 > Component Tests > Input Devices

Run Touchpad test

If a Failure ID appears, note it down

Refer to the below link:

https://Run HP UEFI Hardware Diagnostics

I hope this helps

Take care and have an amazing day ahead! 🚀
