My HP Omnibook 14" (RYZEN 2000Mhz), 2240 x 1400 res. 512GB SSD, 16GB memory has HP corded USB mouse. P/N 672652-001. It keeps freezing my Windows screen whether I am on browser, Excel/Word, email, or Windows Explorer. I am running Windows 11. Otherwise the Laptop works perfectly. My last 5 Windows updates:

My "gut feel" says this is a HP-hardware specific (or mouse driver, display driver) issue. Only HP and
Microsoft can really get down to the bottom of this nagging problem.
I started getting this frozen screen behaviour around end-Feb / early Mar-2025.
Would be grateful for tips and guidance.

@rtan2010, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Based on your description and timeline, you’re very likely right that this is a hardware driver conflict triggered by a recent Windows Update, particularly given that the issue started after the February or March 2025 updates and consistently happens when using your HP corded USB mouse (P/N 672652-001).Let’s walk through a smart troubleshooting path to isolate and potentially resolve this issue.
Test with Another USB Mouse
- Try another wired USB mouse (preferably non-HP) for at least 30 minutes.
- If no freezing occurs, it’s a clear hardware- or driver-specific conflict with the HP mouse.
USB Power Management Settings
Sometimes USB devices freeze due to Windows trying to "optimize power".
Disable USB Selective Suspend:
- Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings.
- Expand USB settings > USB selective suspend setting.
- Set to Disabled.
- Click OK and reboot.
Prevent USB Root Hub from Power Saving:
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Right-click on USB Root Hub > Properties.
- Under Power Management, uncheck “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power”.
- Repeat for all “USB Root Hub” entries.
Check for Hidden Driver Conflicts (Mouse or Display)
Reinstall the HP USB Mouse Driver:
- In Device Manager, expand Mice and other pointing devices.
- Unplug your mouse and replug it. Look for the HP mouse entry (could be listed as HID-compliant).
- Right-click > Uninstall device (check “Delete the driver software” if shown).
- Reboot. Windows will reinstall a default driver.
Update Display Driver (AMD/HP OEM):
- Go to Device Manager > Display adapters.
- Right-click > Update driver > Search automatically.
- If nothing new: visit HP support or AMD’s Auto-Detect Tool to update manually.
Check for HP-Specific Drivers/Firmware
There may have been driver or firmware updates silently handled by HP Support Assistant or Windows Update.
- Launch HP Support Assistant and check under "Updates".
- Look for:
- System firmware (BIOS)
- USB controller driver
- HP mouse driver (though rare for basic mice)
- Install any relevant updates or rollback if any were installed around late Feb.
Use Reliability Monitor
This is a goldmine for crash diagnostics.
- Press Win + S and type Reliability Monitor.
- Check around Feb 28 – Mar 5 and onward.
- Look for “Hardware error”, “Windows stopped working”, or “Driver failed to respond”.
- Let me know what’s there, and I can help you interpret it.
Optional: Roll Back Problem Updates
If you're sure the freezing began after a specific Windows update (like KB5052093 or KB5053598), you can test by:
- Go to Settings > Windows Update > Update History > Uninstall Updates.
- Identify and uninstall KB5052093 or KB5053598.
- Reboot and test.
Final Resort: Use USB-to-PS/2 Adapter or Bluetooth Mouse
If it’s truly a compatibility issue between the USB polling rate or protocol and the chipset/driver, either:
- Use a Bluetooth mouse (since it avoids USB stack entirely), or
- Try a USB-to-PS/2 adapter if you have one.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Hello Max3Ai --my sincerest thanks for your extensive set of recommendations.
I will try one suggestion at a time, starting first with a different mouse. I've switched the HP mouse (which was procured together with the Omnibook laptop in Nov-2024) to a generic cheap brand -- VICTSING purchased from Amazon. My previous 3 laptops on Windows 10 and Windows 11 worked very well with this cheap brand, ironically. I've always adhered to using corded mouse, because those cordless models require battery change and often create many side issues.
I forgot to include one additional item of detail that may impinge upon a successful analysis of the problem. because the Omnibook has only 2 USB-C ports and one USB-A port, I have a USB port extender (made by ACER) that supports a USB-C connection to the laptop, and the following extended ports:
2 USB-A, 1 USB-C for charging, 1 USB-C for (in my case) connection to Ethernet RJ45 adapter,
2 multi-media reader (for SDXC/SDHC card), 1 HDMI port.
Thank you again -- I will report my experiences with these trials.
Best,

Hello Max3Ai -- I have tried the first 2 suggestions and they failed. Let me elaborate:
1) used a VICTSING mouse. Within minutes, it froze the screen like before.
2) I did not find any :"Expand USB settings" in following the Control Panel steps,
In desperation, I went to Windows 11 USB settings, and changed one feature -- this
is shown in the attached screenshot below --
So far, with the VICTSING mouse and the above change, my laptop screen has NOT YET frozen.
I hope this is THE cure. My sincere thanks for your attention.
