Hello everyone,
I have my laptop hooked up to an external display monitor. I keep my laptop shut when I am using the external monitor. The problem is no matter what settings I adjust in windows my display goes to sleep after 3 mins. It dives me crazy! I have everything set to never go to sleep in all my power settings. And when the external display is not in use the laptop never goes to sleep. PLZ help!
thanks!

Welcome to the HP Forums 🙂 I would like to take a moment and thank you for using this forum, it is a great place to find answers. I see from your post you are in need of support and I'll be glad to assist you.
To provide you with an accurate solution, I'll need a few more details:
What is the product number of the notebook? Use this link to find it: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c03754824 (Ensure you do not share any of your personal information such as serial, phone number, email ID, etc...).
Have you recently made any software or hardware changes on the PC before the issue started?
Does the monitor go to sleep, when connected to an alternate computer as well? If yes, I would suggest you try these steps here: Click here for the link to open.
Alternatively, I would suggest you try these steps here, If the issue persists:
For now please try these steps:
- Right-Click on start button> click device manager> expand display adapters>then select the display drivers that are listed and right-click on it and uninstall the drivers.
- Check the box that states delete the software for this device. Then restart the computer and update the bios chipset and graphics drivers from this link: https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers Select the country and enter the product# of the computer. Please select the correct operating system and follow the on-screen instructions.
Please perform a hard reset from this link:
Then perform these steps to see if it gets resolved:
- Go to Control Panel, then click Power Options.
- From the Select a power plan page, click Choose what the power buttons do from the list on the left panel.
- On the Define power buttons and turn on password protection page, you then have the option of choosing what happens when you:
- press the power button
- press the sleep button
- When I close the lid- select the sleep option (not shutdown or hibernate)
- Now check again.
- If it does not work then please perform all the prescribed steps from this link: HP PCs - Sleep and Hibernate Issues (Windows 10, 😎 and follow the option “The computer does not wake up from sleep or hibernate mode”.Then check if the issue is resolved. Please disable Hybrid sleep as well.
This should fix the issue.
- Please change the power plan and set it to high performance from this link: HP Notebook PCs - Managing Power Options (Windows 10)
Now check for issue resolution.
- If the issue continues, then create a new user account as an administrator from this link: https://hp.care/2rZfJBC
- Log into the new user account after restarting your computer and check again.
- This might do the trick for you.
Could you please respond to this post with the details and with the results of the troubleshooting as this will help me in further assisting you.
