@55410, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding display turning black intermittently while the external monitor functions!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Since you've already tried updating Windows, BIOS, and running diagnostics, here are additional steps to resolve the issue:

Check Graphics Driver

The problem might be related to the display or graphics driver.

  • Update Graphics Drivers:

    • Open Device Manager > Expand Display Adapters.
    • Right-click your graphics card (e.g., NVIDIA, Intel) and choose Update Driver > Search Automatically for Drivers.
    • Alternatively, download the latest drivers directly from the NVIDIA or Intel website based on your GPU model.
  • Roll Back Driver:

    • If the issue started after a driver update, right-click the GPU in Device Manager > Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver.

Check Display Settings

Ensure the internal display settings are correct.

  • Right-click the desktop and select Display Settings.
  • Ensure your built-in screen is set as the primary display.
  • Click Advanced Display Settings and check the refresh rate. Use the default setting (e.g., 60 Hz or 144 Hz).

Test with Safe Mode

Boot the laptop in Safe Mode to rule out software conflicts:

  1. Press Shift + Restart from the Start menu to access Advanced Startup.
  2. Navigate to Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Startup Settings > Restart.
  3. Select Enable Safe Mode.

If the built-in screen works in Safe Mode, the issue is likely related to drivers or third-party apps.

Perform a Clean Boot

To identify if a startup app is causing the issue:

  1. Press Windows + R, type msconfig, and hit Enter.
  2. Under the Services tab, check Hide all Microsoft services and click Disable All.
  3. Go to the Startup tab and open Task Manager.
  4. Disable all startup items, restart the laptop, and test the built-in display.

Check for Hardware Issues

If the problem persists, it could be a hardware issue with the built-in display.

  • Run an external monitor exclusively:

    • Disconnect the external monitor and boot the laptop to see if the issue is isolated to the internal display.
  • Perform a Display Self-Test (if available):

    • Some HP laptops allow you to test the screen hardware by pressing a specific key combination during boot (e.g., F2 or Esc).

Update Firmware for Graphics and Monitor

Visit the HP support page to check for any firmware updates for the display or GPU.

Factory Reset or Reinstallation

If none of the above works, consider a factory reset or reinstalling Windows.

  • Go to Settings > System > Recovery > Reset this PC.
  • Choose Keep My Files to preserve personal data.

Let me know if you need further assistance.

Take care, and have an amazing day!
