Hi @Kelly2103,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP laptop's screen brightness isn't changing properly when you adjust it and only changes after signing out and then signing back in, there could be a few potential causes and solutions you can try.
- Update Graphics Drivers: Outdated or corrupted graphics drivers can cause issues with screen brightness control. Update your graphics drivers to the latest version available from the HP website or through Windows Update.
- Power Settings: Check your power settings to ensure that the brightness isn't being automatically adjusted based on power plans. Sometimes, certain power-saving settings can affect brightness control.
- BIOS Update: Occasionally, BIOS updates can address hardware compatibility issues, including problems related to screen brightness control. Check if there's a BIOS update available for your laptop model on HP's support website.
- Reset Power Plans: Resetting your power plans to default settings might help. You can do this by going to Control Panel > Power Options > Change plan settings > Restore default settings for this plan.
- Display Driver Uninstall and Reinstall: Sometimes, uninstalling and then reinstalling the display drivers can resolve issues. You can do this by going to Device Manager, locating your display adapter, right-clicking on it, and selecting Uninstall. Then, restart your laptop, and Windows will automatically reinstall the drivers.
- Windows Update: Ensure that your Windows operating system is up to date with the latest updates. Sometimes, Windows updates include fixes for various hardware-related issues.
- Check for Malware: It's unlikely, but malware could potentially interfere with system functions. Perform a thorough scan of your system using reputable antivirus software to rule out any malicious activity.
- Hardware Issue: If none of the above solutions work, there might be a hardware issue with the laptop's display or its components.
Try these steps one by one to see if any of them resolve the issue.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
