Hi @Naomi142,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

A flashing screen on an HP laptop can be caused by a variety of issues, ranging from software problems to hardware malfunctions. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially fix the issue.

Restart Your Laptop: Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve minor software glitches causing the screen to flash. Press the "Restart" button or use the keyboard shortcut (Ctrl + Alt + Delete) to restart your laptop.

Update Graphics Drivers: Outdated or corrupted graphics drivers can cause screen flickering. Visit the HP support website or use the HP Support Assistant to check for and install the latest graphics driver updates.

Boot into Safe Mode: Boot your laptop into Safe Mode to see if the issue persists. If the screen doesn't flash in Safe Mode, it's likely a software problem. If it still does, it could be a hardware issue.

Adjust Screen Refresh Rate:

  • Right-click on the desktop and select "Display settings."
  • Scroll down and click on "Advanced display settings."
  • Under "Refresh rate," try selecting a different rate and see if the flashing stops. Stick with the one that works.

Check for Malware or Viruses: Malware or viruses can interfere with your computer's normal operation. Run a full system scan using your antivirus software to eliminate this possibility.

Disable Hardware Acceleration (for web browsers):

  • If the flashing occurs when using web browsers, try disabling hardware acceleration in the browser's settings.

Check for Loose or Damaged Cables: Ensure that the laptop's display cable, if accessible, is properly connected. Loose or damaged cables can cause display issues.

Update or Roll Back Windows Updates: Sometimes, Windows updates can introduce compatibility issues. If the problem started after a recent update, try rolling back to a previous version or installing the latest updates if available.

Run Windows Troubleshooters: Windows has built-in troubleshooters for various issues. You can access them through the "Settings" app under "Update & Security" > "Troubleshoot."

Test in Another User Account: Create a new user account on your laptop and see if the problem persists when logged in as the new user. This can help determine if the issue is user-specific.

Check for Overheating: Overheating can lead to various problems, including screen issues. Ensure that the laptop's vents and fans are clean and functioning properly.

Perform a System Restore: If the problem started recently and you can pinpoint it to a specific event or installation, you can try performing a system restore to a point when the laptop was working correctly.

Hardware Inspection: If none of the above steps resolve the issue, it could be a hardware problem, such as a faulty graphics card, display, or motherboard.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
