Hi,

Absolute newb here with computer drawing stylus problems.

Three weeks ago, I purchased a refurbished HP EliteBook x360 1030 G2 with an Intel processor (Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-7300U CPU @ 2.60GHz 2.71 GHz).  It came loaded with Windows 11.

This week I purchased a third-party drawing stylus on Amazon that was listed as being compatible with the HP EliteBook x360 1030 G2.  I assume, based on my experience with buying computer tchotchkes, that the stylus was made in China.

I have been trying all morning to get my EliteBook to recognize and pair with the stylus, and I have not been able to do that.

Microsoft Edge's CoPilot suggested downloading the HP Pen control app which is not compatible with my EliteBook model.

It then suggested downloading drivers for the stylus from HP Support which I cannot do because Windows 11 is for some reason not listed as an operating system.

It then suggested downloading Wacom drivers or downloading Intel drivers.

Before I waste any more time and energy, I thought I would check here for suggestions/advice.

Graphic design is part of my skill set, and I need to get a stylus working ASAP.

Thanks.

Dragon-Fur,

Again, thanks for all your useful information.  I have not replied because I have spent every day since I first posted here chasing information on the HP Active Pen and how to pair it with the HP EliteBook X360 1030 G2 notebook.

I have finally been able to pair a rechargeable Chinese knock-off pen with my EliteBook.  It works perfectly except in one situation.

I purchased the pen because I am a graphic designer.  I use Windows Paint and GIMP to create graphic images.  The pen works perfectly with Windows Paint, but not with GIMP.  You may or may not be familiar with these programs/apps.

My Internet research indicates that one solution to this problem may be to download WinTab drivers from the HP website.  The problem is that I have downloaded updated drivers again and again from the HP website, and when it comes to configuring GIMP, these updates have no made a difference.

Regarding your suggestions and information, these things have helped me to eliminate certain things as useful and to focus more concretely on actions that move me in a positive direction.

I can say that you have guided me to a level of success in using my EliteBook that I did not expect, and I am very excited about that.

At this point, I need to check with a GIMP Facebook group that I am part of, so on this matter, I can say you have substantially solved my problem.  Thank you so much!

Welcome to the HP English Community --

True - There are not drivers listed for Windows 11 and this system.

Regardless, HP does not provide third party driver support.

True, too - HP Pen Control is not useful (or usable) with the HP pen type listed as supported for this business class system.

Dragon-Fur,

Thanks for responding to my post.  I have clicked on the links you supplied.  I have been able to download the user's manual.  That will be helpful.

When I clicked on the link HP with Active Pen App Launch, I ended up on this page:

And this is the information I saw on the page:

I knew when I purchased it that my refurbished HP EliteBook x360 1030 G2 is a model no longer supported by HP.  I assumed however that HP would still have accessories and drivers available to help me use my EliteBook successfully.  This does not appear to be the case.

I have searched the HP website and cannot find any accessories or drivers for use with my HP EliteBook x360 1030 G2.  I don't understand why this is the case.

I also don't understand why any vendor would sell accessories supposedly compatible with my HP EliteBook x360 1030 G2 if those accessories cannot be paired with it.

I researched as carefully as I could about styluses that are supposedly compatible with my HP EliteBook x360 1030 G2, and I have gotten a lot of conflicting information.  I have ordered two different styluses, and neither of them appears to be compatible even though my research says they are.

Is there one stylus that is actually compatible?  Are there drivers that I can actually download?  Would it be better for me to contact the shop that sold me my HP EliteBook x360 1030 G2 and ask for advice?

I have found this stylus on EBay:

It does not look like the stylus I purchased on Amazon.  Before I spend more money, is there a way for me to tell if this stylus will pair with my EliteBook with no problems?

I know this is a lot of questions, but I really need a stylus that works.

Dragon-Fur,

Thanks for responding to my post.  Unfortunately, except for the link to the user's manual, the links you supplied were dead ends for me.

I found no information about a drawing stylus compatible with my EliteBook or about drivers for the stylus or about apps that would make it easy to pair a stylus with my EliteBook.  As you might imagine, this is not a positive for me.

I have used Microsoft CoPilot to look further for a stylus compatible with my EliteBook, and I hve found this stylus on EBay:

This is a THIRD type of stylus that I have seen that is supposedly compatible with my EliteBook.  I don't want to spend time chasing down a stylus unless it is compatible with my EliteBook and will  pair with it with no problems.

How can I make sure of these things?

Any suggestions appreciated.

You are welcome.

The dead-ish link was merely an information page about the pen -- it does not impact whether the pen works or not nor was the information critical.  I will remove the link.

The "Active Pen" stylus is the pen mentioned in the EliteBook service manual.

HP does not publish a list of which third party pens are supported by which HP system.

Yes, pens look different - generally what a pen looks like does not indicate compatibility.

The 1030 G2 is an old model -- nothing about being old is great, though it's true that the system might serve your needs.

True - Parts might be more difficult to obtain, compatibility can be a challenge, too.

All manufacturers tend to look forward rather than back.

The G2 is old enough that it is not any longer in the technology spotlight.

Most stylus pens, including this one, do not need drivers -- they work with a compatible device and they refuse to work with a device (computer) that is not compatible.

I'm sorry I cannot help with specifics or third party recommendations.

You are welcome.

Drivers aside, some pens simply include more options or features than do others.

That said, the subject does appear to be shrouded in mystery -- not my first choice for an accessory so often used.

So far there is not (to my knowledge) a definitive resource for "this pen works with this system" that crosses hardware brands.

AI might eventually help close the gap, though in my opinion using the Internet as a source of reference material can lead to both very good and fairly useless results.

Good Luck.
