HP Pavilion Gaming 15-dk2000 Laptop PC (2P1Z6AV)

Screenshot 2023-11-26 213005.pngScreenshot 2023-11-26 212449.pngI have bought a new 144hz monitor to connect to my laptop (HP PAVILION GAMING LAPTOP 15-DK2010NX (5C1REA)) using an HDMI 2.0 cable the problem here is that the 144hz option does not seem to show it maxes out at 120hz. note I watched a lot of videos about this problem covering basic troubleshooting techniques but all of them did not work, i also checked that the monitor HDMI port supports 144hz in HDMI. I talked to Microsoft I and Intel about this problem and all of them said I need to go to the HP support team. Should I try connecting it using the display port instead of HDMI using type-c alt mood as I found out that this PC USB-C supports dp 1.4  or it will not make a difference?

Hi @KIMO_007 ,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The HDMI 2.0 standard theoretically supports a 144Hz refresh rate, it seems like you've already checked the basics, such as ensuring that the monitor's HDMI port supports 144Hz and using the correct HDMI 2.0 cable.

Here are a few additional suggestions:

Update Graphics Drivers: Ensure that your laptop's graphics drivers are up to date. Visit the official website of the GPU manufacturer (NVIDIA or AMD) to download and install the latest drivers for your GPU.

Custom Resolution in Graphics Settings: Sometimes, you may need to create a custom resolution in your graphics settings to enable a higher refresh rate. Right-click on your desktop, go to your graphics settings (NVIDIA Control Panel or AMD Radeon Settings), and check if there's an option to create a custom resolution with a 144Hz refresh rate.

Check for BIOS/UEFI Updates: Ensure that your laptop's BIOS/UEFI is up to date. Manufacturers release updates that can address compatibility issues and improve performance.

Try DisplayPort over USB-C: Since your laptop supports DisplayPort 1.4 over USB-C, you can try connecting your monitor using a USB-C to DisplayPort cable. This may bypass any limitations associated with the HDMI connection.

Check Monitor Settings: Double-check your monitor's settings and make sure it's set to its native resolution and refresh rate. Sometimes, monitors may default to lower settings.

Verify Monitor Compatibility: Confirm that the monitor is indeed capable of running at 144Hz over HDMI. Some monitors may have different HDMI ports, and only one of them might support higher refresh rates.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

I can see on your screenshot that your monitor is connected to the integrated GPU (Intel iris) of your laptop and not the dGPU ( nvidia, radeon,...). As the intel iris is way less powerfull, it shows that it can only render 120hz max... To see if the hdmi input is connected to your dGPU open the nvidia control panel and go on "physiX", there you can see which input is connected to your NVIDIA. If the hdmi is shown, there must be a setting that can be done to target the dGPU in "Display adaptater properties for display 2".
