Hi @Carolineh59,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP laptop's screen won't turn on but you can hear the fan and see the power lights, it might be due to several factors such as a display, hardware, or software issue. Here are a few troubleshooting steps you can try.
Perform a Hard Reset
- Power off the laptop.
- Disconnect all external devices (USB drives, external hard drives, etc.).
- Unplug the charger and remove the battery (if it's removable).
- Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds to drain residual power.
- Reinsert the battery and connect the charger.
- Try turning the laptop on again.
Check Display with External Monitor
- Connect your laptop to an external monitor or TV using an HDMI or VGA cable.
- Power on the laptop and see if the external screen displays anything.
- If the external display works, the issue might be with the laptop screen itself (cable, inverter, or backlight).
Try a Display Toggle
- Some laptops have a display toggle function (usually F4, F5, or F8). Press Fn + F4 (or similar key) to cycle through display modes (laptop screen, external screen, both).
Reset Display Settings
- Turn on the laptop and wait a few minutes for the system to boot.
- Press Windows Key + Ctrl + Shift + B. This key combination forces Windows to refresh the display connection.
Check for Beeping Sounds or LED Blink Codes
- Listen for any beeping sounds when the laptop starts or check if the LEDs are blinking in a specific pattern. These might indicate a hardware issue (RAM or GPU).
- Refer to HP's LED or beep code troubleshooting to identify the problem.
Check if Laptop is in Sleep Mode
- Sometimes the laptop screen won't turn on if it's stuck in sleep mode. Try pressing the power button for 10 seconds to force a shutdown, then restart.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
