I have a pen from my old HP x360 Spectre G3, and according to what i can find on the internet, it should work with the newer Elitebook x360 G5, but even connected it doesnt respond. Is there a fix for this?

Hi @RyzKazumaki

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query.

I understand that your HP pen from an older Spectre x360 G3 is not responding on your HP EliteBook x360 G5, even though the models appear to support active pens. This issue is commonly caused by pen protocol compatibility, battery issues, Bluetooth pairing problems (for Bluetooth-enabled pens), or missing firmware/drivers. I would request you to please follow the steps:

Check the Pen Battery

  • If your pen uses an AAAA battery:
  • Remove the battery.
  • Ensure it is inserted with the correct.
  • Replace it with a new battery.
  • If the pen has a rechargeable battery:
  • Fully charge the pen before testing.

A weak battery may still allow Bluetooth pairing while preventing ink input.

Restart the Notebook

  • Shut down the notebook completely.
  • Disconnect the charger.
  • Hold the Power button for 30 seconds.
  • Turn the notebook back on.
  • Test the pen again.

Enable Touch and Pen Devices

  • Press Windows + X.
  • Open Device Manager.
  • Expand: Human Interface Devices
  • Bluetooth (if applicable)
  • Ensure the following devices are enabled:
  • HID-compliant touch screen
  • HID-compliant pen
  • Intel Precise Touch Device.
  • If any are disabled:
  • Right-click > Enable device.

Update Windows

  • Open Settings > Windows Update.
  • Select Check for updates.
  • Install:
  • Windows updates
  • Optional driver updates

Remove and Re-pair the Pen (If Bluetooth Enabled)

If the pen includes Bluetooth functions:

  • Open Settings >Bluetooth & devices.
  • Remove the HP Pen from paired devices.
  • Hold the pen's top button for approximately 10 seconds until the LED flashes.
  • Pair it again.
  • Test writing in Microsoft Whiteboard, OneNote, or Paint.

Run HP Hardware Diagnostics

  • Restart the notebook.
  • Repeatedly press F2 during startup.
  • Open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI.
  • Click to Touchscreen.
  • Run Test.

Take care and have an amazing day!
