OMEN by HP 15-ax200 Laptop PC
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

By default the touchpad is disabled when typing. This would be a great asset for a business or school setup but this laptop is designed and intended for gamers. How am I suppose to play a game when the touchpad is disabled during key presses?

Searching the web I have not found an answer.

I have tried disabling all SmartSense features with no luck. Please tell me how to disable this feature. I would rather not have to always connect an external mouse.

Older versions had an Omen Control Panel that allowed it to be disabled but it is no longer installed on the Omens nor have I been able to find a download to try it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Joe

Thank you for responding,

It's great to have you back 😉

I appreciate the details and since you've already done the suggested steps and yet the issue persists,

Let's try a few more steps that should ensure a resolution is found:

  • First, download the Synaptics driver on the link below and save it to your Downloads folder: Synaptics Driver Version 17.0.18.8
  • Turn off your wireless card ( should be f12 ).
  • Open windows control panel, open Programs and Features, right click the current Synaptics driver and select Uninstall.
  • When complete, restart the notebook.
  • When windows has reloaded, open your Downloads folder and run the Synaptics installer - when this has completed, restart the notebook again.
  • Open the Synaptics settings panel, disable SmartSense or PalmCheck and then check if the touchpad will now work with a keyboard key held down.
  • If it does, turn your wireless card back on and use the utility on the following link to prevent Windows 10 from automatically updating the Synaptics driver: https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/kb/3073930

Let me know how that pans out

@RowdyRocket

Thank you for joining HP Forums.

I'll be glad to help you 🙂

As I understand the Omen gaming laptop stops touchpad with key press,

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, however, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:

Did you turns off filter, sticky & mouse keys?

When was the last time it worked? did you perform a system restore?

While you respond to that, here's what you need to do:

  1. In Windows, search for and open Control Panel.

  2. In Control Panel, click Ease of Access.

    Figure : Ease of Access

Control panel with ease of access selected
  3. In the Ease of Access Center, click Make the keyboard easier to use.

Figure : Ease of Access Center

Ease of access with Make the keyboard easier to use selected
  4. Uncheck the option for Turn on Mouse Keys, and then click OK.

If the issue persists, please try the below steps:

  1. Type WIN+R and start "regedit" (or simply use the Windows Search and type regedit).
  2. Confirm that you're an admin (a window may pop up).
  3. Navigate to KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Synaptics\SynTP\Install
  4. Change DeleteUserSettingsOnUpgrade from 1 to 0
  5. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Synaptics\SynTPCpl
  6. Change RestoreAllDefaults from 1 to 0
  7. Now you can change the ClickPad-Settings (of course, they will not be deleted after a restart, and you can change them as many times as you want to)

Keep me posted,

If the information I've provided was helpful,

give us some reinforcement by clicking the solution and kudos buttons,

that'll help us and others see that we've got the answers!

Good Luck.

Thanks for the reply!

Unfortunately it's still not working. It has not worked since I purchased the laptop a few weeks ago. I haven' t had the issue of settings reverting after reboot because I have not had any progress on any of the fixes I've attempted. However, the registry fix may help when we find the solution.

The mouse key option was already uncheck and I have applied the registry fix. Also as I mention before SmartSense is also disabled in the Synaptics control panel.

Do you have any other ideas?

That seems to have solved my problem. It worked even after just uninstalling the Synaptic Driver of course I no longer had the multitouch features until I installed the driver you suggested.

Thanks! You're my hero!

I had the same issue and this solution worked, however, the new driver doesn't seem to support all the nifty windows 10 trackpad shortcut like 3-finger gestures for switching tasks/ showing the desktop. Is this correct or have I overlooked something?
