Once the D key is pressed it will keep repeating, or sometimes it starts repeating on its own.  It can be stopped by pressing another key or the backspace key.

Hi @JCM75,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It seems like you're experiencing an issue with a repeating key on your HP Pavilion dv6 laptop running Windows 7. This could be due to a hardware or software issue. Here are a few steps you can try to troubleshoot and resolve the problem.

  • Check for Physical Obstructions: Make sure there's no physical obstruction or debris under the D key. Sometimes, particles can get stuck, causing keys to behave erratically.
  • Update Keyboard Drivers: Ensure that your keyboard drivers are up to date. You can do this through the Device Manager on Windows.
  • Restart Your Laptop: Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve temporary software glitches. Restart your laptop and check if the issue persists.
  • Test in Safe Mode: Boot your laptop in Safe Mode and check if the issue persists. If it doesn't, it might be caused by a third-party software or driver.
  • Check for Malware: Run a full antivirus scan to check for malware or malicious software that could be affecting your keyboard behavior.
  • Adjust Keyboard Settings: Go to the Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Keyboard, and check if there are any settings related to key repeat rate. Adjust these settings to see if it makes a difference.
  • Update Operating System: Make sure your Windows 7 operating system is fully updated. Microsoft may have released patches or updates that address such issues.
  • Check for Sticky Keys: Sticky Keys is a feature in Windows that can cause key repetition. Ensure that Sticky Keys is disabled. You can find this in the Ease of Access Center.
  • External Keyboard Test: If possible, connect an external keyboard to your laptop and check if the issue persists. This can help determine if the problem is with the laptop's keyboard itself.
  • Check for Background Applications: Some applications running in the background might interfere with keyboard input. Check Task Manager for any unnecessary processes.

If the issue continues after trying these steps, there might be a hardware problem with the laptop's keyboard,

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
