Opening laptop lid changes display settings

I have configured the laptop to "do nothing" on closing the lid as I have an external display I permanently use. However every time I close the lid then reopen it (which I do frequently), the display reverts to the laptop screen, and I have to go through display settings to set up the external display again. The drivers seem to be up to date

Update the Bios, chipset, and drivers using HP Support Assistant.

Hi - all drivers and software are up to date. I am 95% sure this is a Windows problem: if the System Display dialog box is visible when the lid is opened I can see it clearly reverting from "Show only on 2" to "Show only on 1". The workaround I adopted was to get an external keyboard so I can keep the lid closed permanently
