Hi @Truckerface,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thank you for reaching out. I understand you’re having an issue with no HDMI signal on an external monitor while using Linux/Ubuntu on your HP notebook. I’ll outline HP’s support position first, then provide some basic troubleshooting steps that may help.

HP Support Scope (Important)

  • HP notebooks are officially tested and supported with the Windows that shipped with the device.
  • Linux / Ubuntu support is limited, and HP does not provide model-specific Linux drivers or troubleshooting beyond basic hardware guidance.
  • That said, HDMI issues on Linux are often configuration or driver-related, not hardware failures.

Basic Troubleshooting Steps (Ubuntu / Linux)

1. Check HDMI detection

Open a terminal and run: xrandr

  • See if the external display appears (e.g., HDMI-1, HDMI-A-0).
  • If detected but disabled, enable it: xrandr --output HDMI-1 --auto

2. Display settings (GUI)

  • Go to Settings → Displays
  • Click Detect Displays
  • Set the external monitor to Mirror or Extend
  • Apply changes

3. Graphics driver check

HDMI output depends heavily on the GPU driver.

Run: lspci | grep -E "VGA|3D"

Then check:

  • Intel / AMD → ensure Mesa drivers are installed
  • NVIDIA → install proprietary NVIDIA driver: ubuntu-drivers devices
                                                                                  sudo ubuntu-drivers autoinstall

Reboot after installation.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
