I have the same problem on my HP 15-cc109na

There seems to be no software solution

I have however found that sticking a post-it note over it reduces the sensitivity sufficiently to ensure that I do not accidentally activate it.

It does not look very good (I also have a bit of post-it note over the web-cam) but it works!

Hey there! @D-F, Thanks for stopping by the HP Support Forums!

I understand you have touchpad issues with your PC.

Don't worry I'll try to help you out.

Did you make any software or hardware changes on your PC?

Have you tried checking with an external mouse?

Splendid analysis and remarkable patience shown. It is immensely appreciated.

Uninstall the touchpad drivers from device manager and try updating the BIOS and touchpad drivers on your PC from the links below.

Update the BIOS using this link. Click Here

Also, update the touchpad drivers using this link. Click Here

You can update other drivers on your PC using HP support assistant.

Refer this article to know more information about using HP support assistant.

Try the steps recommended below.

Control Panel -> Hardware & Sound -> Power Options -> Change Plan Settings (of current selected plan) -> Change Advanced Power Settings -> USB Selective Suspend Setting -> Disable (both)

Control Panel -> Hardware & Sound -> Power Options -> Change Plan Settings (of current selected plan) -> Change Advanced Power Settings -> PCI-Express -> Link State Power Management -> Disable (both)

Also, Try updating the BIOS and chipset driver on your PC and check if it helps.

If the issue still persists after trying out the steps try the steps recommended below.

In Windows, search for Command Prompt. In the search results, right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator. Then click Yes.
In Command Prompt, type sfc /scannow. Make sure to include the space between sfc and the /.
Press Enter and wait while System File Checker scans for corrupted files.
When scanning is complete, the results are displayed on the screen.
If the file checker found and replaced any corrupted files, restart the computer and check the performance.
If the file checker did not find any corrupted files or found corrupted files but could not replace them, go to the next step.
If System File Checker finds corrupted files but cannot replace them, use the Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) tool. DISM checks the corrupted files; then downloads and replaces the files using Windows Update.
In Windows, open a web browser.
   NOTE:
You need to be connected to the Internet to use DISM.
In Windows, search for Command Prompt. In the search results, right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator. Then click Yes.
In Command Prompt, type dism.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth. Make sure to include the space before each / in the command line.
Press Enter and wait while DISM works. This might take several minutes.
If DISM finds corrupted files, it replaces them using Windows Update. If this occurs, after DISM is finished, restart your computer and see if the performance has improved.

Thanks for your response

My computer is running Linux so unless I can run some of these instructions under Wine, I am afraid that they are not of much help although I have attempted to answer the non OS specific suggestions.

Running Lubuntu 18.04.1 LTS (patched up to date) on Kernel 4.15.0.34-generic (x86-64)

Issue did not change when I upgraded from 16.04 LTS. My understanding is that the update process on Linux updates both OS, BIOS and Firmware.

Hardware is unchanged (apart from plugging in a trackball).

OS is clearly a sotware change (but then HP has always long been associated with Unix!)

Other Systems Info:

System is HP Pavilion 15-cc109na. The OS is on the SSD

ETPS/2 Elantech Touchpad (vendor Hewlett-Packard)

DIsks file checker has not flagged any problems

A variety of Mice and Trackballs work fine (which is my work around). The post it note over the trackpad ensures that it is not activated by my thumbs operating the space-bar and getting too close to the hyper-sensitive trackpad (this usually causes the insertion point to move - which when typing is very annoying.  I have been contemplating whether a smart-phone screen protector may give a more attractive result.

@D-F, Thanks for your quick response and time.

I appriciate your efforts for writing back to us.

As you mentioned you are running Linux on your PC and you still have issues with the touchpad.

I have checked the specifications of your PC and your PC was shipped with Windows 10 OS.

The unit has been tested and tried only on a windows platform, So I'm not sure if it is an issue with the Linux OS.

I suggest you reinstall the windows and update the touchpad drivers on your PC and check if it helps.

Refer the laptop specifications page for more information. Click Here

Hope this helps!

Take Care! 🙂
